It looks like Calbert Cheaney has passed on moving up from IU's director of basketball operations to fill the assistant coaching spot opened when Bennie Seltzer left to take over the Samford program.All indications are the job will go to Kenny Johnson, a Towson assistant coach. Towson's 1-31 record isn't a factor for Crean. However, Johnson's longtime connection with Team Takeover, a powerhouse AAU program in the Washington, D.C., area, is a definite plus. Current Hoosiers Maurice Creek and Victor Oladipo played for Team Takeover. IU is also looking at a pair of current Team Takeover players from the Class of 2013 in BeeJay Anya and Stanford Robinson. Robinson also plays high school ball at Paul VI in Fairfax, Va. Johnson coached there for four years. Johnson and his wife attended Thursday night's awards celebration at Assembly Hall. Cheaney has assumed Seltzer's duties in recent weeks. He did evaluations during the Adidas Spring Invitational.

Tomorrow afternoon, they will meet for the first time as playoff opponents in hopes of waking a dormant rivalry.Anthony has won the majority of their head-to-head meetings but James has posted slightly better numbers. In 15 career meetings, Anthony has a 9-6 advantage over James and averaged 23 points, 6 rebounds and 2.4 assists per game. James has averaged 25.1 points, 7.3 assists and 6.2 rebounds.

Jordan is now the coach of the D.C. Assault 17U team, a prominent AAU program from Washington D.C., that has churned out talent like Michael Beasley of the Minnesota Timberwolves and Nolan Smith of the Portland Trailblazers. It took me this long to get me where I really wanted to be,” he told NBCSports.com. “Frankly, I wanted to coach middle school and high school kids. I was raised in southeast Washington D.C. It was a tough environment.
"I saw what my high school and middle school coach did and said, ‘This is what you can do to affect kids and make a difference and change kids’ lives." Jordan, 57, was the head coach of three NBA teams in his nine-year career, and was also an assistant on the New Jersey Nets teams that reached the NBA Finals in 2002 and 2003. He was fired from the Philadelphia 76ers in 2010 after just one season, finishing with a record of 27-55. But that is where the path, unconventional as it may seem, led back to his roots in Washington D.C. He took a position as the freshman basketball coach at his alma mater, Archbishop Carroll High School (D.C.), after leaving the 76ers, where he was approached by Curtis Malone, an acquaintance who helps to run the D.C. Assault program. Malone invited Jordan to work out with the team this past fall, and which led to Jordan taking over as coach this spring. At the center of his program is point guard Nate Britt, a 2013 prospect committed to play for coach Roy Williams at North Carolina.
Britt is an intelligent basketball player who, when not playing for D.C. Assault, is the point man at Gonzaga (D.C.), one of the strongest programs in the D.C.-area conference, the WCAC.
As an elite-level guard, Britt says he is focused on what Jordan brings to the floor.
D.C. Assault was eliminated in the quarterfinals of the 2012 Pitt Jam Fest, but not before a strong performance from Britt and 2013 forward Kris Jenkins.
The 6-5, 230-pound Jenkins is currently drawing interest from schools that include Rutgers, Virginia Tech, Miami, and Villanova. He, too, is drawing off of Jordan’s presence with the Assault program.
“To have somebody who played and coached at that level is great,” says Jenkins. “He has knowledge and is a great teacher.”

George Mikan, Wilt Chamberlain, Michael Jordan, Neil Johnston, Bob McAdoo and George Gervin all have something in common. They are all Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame members. They also are the only NBA players to be scoring champions three seasons in a row or more. Kevin Durant can now be added to that list. He's not in the Hall of Fame yet, but he did become just the seventh person to win the NBA's scoring title three years running. Jordan and Chamberlain accomplished the feat seven straight seasons, the only players to have more than three consecutive scoring titles. Durant finished the abbreviated NBA season with 28 points per game. His closest competitor, Kobe Bryant, was 38 points behind and had 27.9 points per contest. Bryant sat out the final game of the year saying, "I don't care about that."

Summer leagues
Martinsburg-Berkeley County Parks and Recreation is accepting registration for a summer basketball league.
The league is open to boys entering grades one through 12 and girls entering grades one through eight. The registration fee is $45, and there is a $5 discount for sibling when registering two children in the same family.
The deadline to register is June 1. After that date, a $5 late fee will be attached.

Here's a look at Virginia's top 2013 targets, in alphabetical order.

Anthony Barber (Hampton, VA): Barber would be the real prize of the 2013 class for Virginia. Point guard is obviously UVA's biggest need, and Barber is one of the best point guards out there. Barber has good size for a point guard, with elite quickness and playmaking ability. Obviously with his proximity to Charlottesville, Bennett and the Cavaliers have been on Barber for some time now. Barber, who goes by the nickname "Big Cat," was AAU teammates with 2012 Virginia signee Justin Anderson, and that certainly doesn't hurt. The 6'2'' guard currently holds offers from Virginia, Virginia Tech, NC State and Providence. Seth Greenberg's departure in Blacksburg is helpful to Virginia's position, because the two in-state schools seem to be in the driver's seat for Barber at the moment. An offer from UNC, Duke or Kentucky could doom the Cavaliers' pursuit of Barber, as it has with many other UVA targets in the past.
Troy Caupain (Midlothian, VA): The in-state guard holds offers from Virginia, Virginia Tech and Richmond so far. Although Virginia has offered, it is not clear at this point how hard the staff is recruiting him, and Caupain could be seen as somewhat of a backup option for the Cavaliers. If UVA loses out on some other shooting guard targets like Stanford Robinson and Matt Thomas, expect Virginia to up its interest in Caupain. For now, it's hard to get a read on where Caupain will end up, but Virginia is at least involved at this point.
Corban Collins (Woodstock, VA): The 6'2'' point guard does not currently hold an offer from the Cavaliers, but the coaching staff is keeping tabs on him at this point. Like Caupain, Collins could be a backup option at the position he plays, and Virginia may target Collins if they lose out on guys like Anthony Barber and Tyler Ennis. Virginia Tech had shown some interest in Collins before Seth Greenberg was fired this week, and it remains to be seen how the new staff will go about pursuing Collins. As for now, it's a wait and see approach with Collins' recruitment, at least until Virginia offers him.
Stanford Robinson (Fairfax, VA): Here is another in-state target that the Cavaliers have been seriously pursuing. The Paul VI guard stands 6'4'', and would probably play the two-guard spot in college. Robinson's recruitment has taken off in the last year, and he holds offers from Virginia, Virginia Tech, Miami, NC State, and Pittsburgh among others. There is also reported interest from Georgetown, Maryland and Indiana as well. The interest between Virginia and Robinson seems mutual, and the UVA staff has put themselves in a solid position to land the Fairfax native.
Brandan Stith (Brunswick, VA): Stith's younger brother B.J. is committed to Virginia for the 2014 class. It probably goes without saying, but the Stith brothers are the sons of former UVA and NBA player Bryant Stith. As for now, Virginia has offered Brandan a scholarship for the 2014 class, after having him prep for a year in 2013 to develop his game further. We will see if Virginia changes their approach to this, but as for now, consider Stith a member of the 2014 class, at least as far as UVA is concerned.
Troy Williams (Hampton, VA): The only reason Williams is included in this list is because he is an in-state target that people will want to know about. Well, he has narrowed his choices down to Kentucky and North Carolina, both of whom have offered. Turn out the lights, the party's over.

This year's events are scheduled at Brunswick High School in Brunswick, Maryland which has two main gyms. The events are similar in that there will be three games minimum for each team over a Saturday and Sunday time table. Dates for each event are as follows:
May 19 and 20, SAFE AND SANE EVENT (Benefits Brunswick High School Senior Class EVENT and is being supported by BHS ATHLETIC BOOSTERS (with Benefits to Brunswick High School Athletics and other BHS Booster club supported events and student services).
June 9 and 10, IRONHORSE STROKE AWARENESS EVENT (Benefits a stroke victim, my brother, who continues to require extensive physical therapy and medical services to improve his quality of life).
Discounts are available for early registration in multiple events or for registering multiple teams in one or more events. Deadline for May event early registration is May 1, 2012, for June event is May 27,2012. The United States All-Stars defeated the Capital All-Stars 105-93 on Saturday night during the 39th annual Capital Classic at T.C. Williams High School in Alexandria, Va.
Senior forward Montrzel Harrell of Hargrave Military Academy (Chatham, Va.) led the winners with 24 points and was named MVP. He will attend Virginia Tech University in the fall. Shaquille Cleare, a 6-foot-9, 270-pounder from Village (Houston, Texas), added 14 points.

Twenty-four players have accepted invitations to attend the 2012 USA Basketball Men’s U18 National Team Training camp June 5-12 at the U.S. Olympic Training Center (USOTC) in Colorado Springs, Colo., including one player with college experience and three players who represented the USA in the 2012 Nike Hoop Summit. The USA Basketball Men’s Junior National Team committee issued the player invitations.

The official, 12-member 2012 USA Men’s U18 National Team will be selected prior to the team’s departure for the 2012 FIBA Americas U18 Championship, which will be played June 16-20 in Sao Sebastiáo do Paraiso, Brazil. Players eligible for this competition must have been born on or after Jan. 1, 1994.mittee and will continue to train at the USOTC. Eight teams will compete in the 2012 U18 zone qualifier, including the USA, Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Columbia, Mexico, Puerto Rico and U.S. Virgin Islands. The top four finishing teams in the tournament will qualify for next summer’s 2013 FIBA U19 World Championship.

John Wall was a champion of the summer hoops circuit during the prolonged NBA lockout of 2011. And while most thought that would lead him to a monster second season, it hasn’t exactly worked out that way. Last night, after the Wizards beat a banged-up Bulls team in Chicago, Wall reflected on the way he handled his summer, going so far as to admit that he wished he would have spent more time in the gym working out, rather than participating in so many summer league and charity games. Mike Prada of BulletsForever has the details: “Speaking to out-of-town reporters after Monday’s win over the Chicago Bulls, Wall said that, if he could do it over again, he’d spend more time working out and less time playing in these games…Q: “Did you feel like you were at a disadvantage this year? Nobody had a summer, nobody had much of a training camp, but for a younger player, that would seem to be pretty important.” A: “No … I didn’t think I had a disadvantage. I just think that, instead of working out more, I did more of playing in charity events and summer leagues, when I should have been working out more. That’s the only thing I think I should have done differently, but it was a great experience going to different states and venues.”"

The Under Armour Hoop Group JamFest is for AAU/traveling teams that will be played at various sites in the Pittsburgh area Friday through Sunday. More than 250 teams will participate from grades 8-11 and will come from 21 states and three Canadian provinces. Also, some teams with senior players will participate in the open division (18 and under). Overall, seven of the top 54 players in the country, according to ESPN rankings, will be in the JamFest. No. 17 Nate Britt (6-1 guard, D.C. Assault), No. 40 Kris Jenkins (6-5 forward, D.C. Assault) and No. 54 Aquille Carr (5-8 guard, Under Armour Baltimore Finest). Britt already made a verbal commitment to North Carolina while Carr committed to Seton Hall.

The news of the 6-foot-10 Robinson’s leaving, of course, comes as no shock. It has long been believed Robinson would be entering his name in the 2012 NBA Draft following this, his junior season. He’s listed as the No. 4 pick overall by draftexpress.com and No. 2 overall pick by nbadraft.net. Robinson, who was a first-team consensus All-American and runner-up to Kentucky’s Anthony Davis for the Wooden Award and AP player of the year, averaged 17.9 points and 11.8 rebounds a game as the Jayhawks stormed to their eighth consecutive Big 12 title and reached the national championship game.

Strengths: The 6’9, 240 lb Robinson is an impressive physical specimen, with nice strength, a good frame, and adequate length as a prototype PF prospect for today’s NBA … Robinson is also a great athlete, with very good explosiveness and quickness for a guy his size ... Runs the floor well … A high energy player who competes hard, Robinson was able to see time and have relatively great production behind two 1st round picks in the Morris twins at his main positions … Will cut to the basket for high % looks … He can get points around the rim by way of his motor, and his athleticism makes him a good finisher ... Great rebounding skills, with outstanding per-minute rebound rates, and will go out of his immediate area to chase down shots … Not afraid of physical contact down low and will throw his weight around on both ends … Shows signs of a developing mid-range jump shot…Has the 1st step to be a mismatch threat as a straight-line slasher against slower PF’s … Can get free throw opportunities due to his aggressive nature … Not bad defensive ability, and will get a block or so every now and then … Willing to put his nose in for charges … Ability to play through all the distractions that surrounded him last year speaks to his mental toughness … Still has substantial upside remaining …

Despite a record-setting 35 points from the USA’s Shabazz Muhammad (Bishop Gorman H.S. / Las Vegas, Nev.), the World Select Team captured an 84-75 win over the USA Junior National Select Team in the Nike Hoop Summit on Saturday night at the Rose Garden in Portland, Ore.
Down by as many as 18 points in the first half, the USA fought back to take a 75-74 lead with 3:20 remaining in the game before the International squad closed on a 10-0 run to capture its fourth win and largest margin of victory in the 15-game history of the event.
