The Gatorade State Boys Basketball Players of the Year have been crowned. The winners were selected based on athletic production and impact in the 2015-16 season. Each winner also demonstrated high academic achievement and exemplary personal character, including volunteerism, sportsmanship and community leadership.
 
THE WINNER: Chris Lykes
 
THE BASICS
School: Gonzaga College (Washington, D.C.)
Grade: Junior
Position: Point guard
Height: 5-foot-8
Weight: 155 pounds
 
Athletic achievement: He averaged 22.0 points, 4.3 assists, 3.7 rebounds and 2.7 steals per game this past season, leading the Eagles (24-10) to the semifinals in both the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference and District of Columbia State Athletic Association. Also the WCAC Player of the Year, Lykes shot 47.3 percent from 3-point range and 74.9 percent from the free-throw line. A returning Honorable Mention All-Met selection as named by The Washington Post, he averaged 9.0 points, 2.0 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 1.5 steals for Team Takeover in Nike’s 2015 Elite Youth Basketball League.
 
Academic excellence: Lykes has maintained a 3.28 GPA.
 
Exemplary character: In addition to donating his time as a youth basketball instructor, he has volunteered at his church, as a peer tutor and on behalf of the National Foundation for Cancer Research.
 
THE PRAISE
“Chris is a great leader,” said Gonzaga head coach Steve Turner. “He leads by example as well as being vocal. He is the kid who will always outwork the guy in front of him. Being a small guy, he understands that a lot of times the cards are stacked against him, but he always finds a way to finish on top.”
 
THE FUTURE: Lykes will begin his senior year of high school this fall.
