HEAD COACH TOM CREAN -  In the three years that he was here, especially during the season, there might have been two days that he took off. One of them I told him not to come in. I’m talking about not just after a game or before a game or on a day off or at the end of practice, I mean, every day he came to work.

It started when he first got to Indiana. When he and Will Sheehey who is from Florida, became two freshmen that walked in and utilized our new building and started working on their games until the last day Victor was here until he headed back to D.C. two days after graduation and all that time in between.

He is an extremely gifted athlete, tremendous charisma, and just strength of will and personality. But when he gets in the gym, it is all business, and that is exactly what propelled him to so many different things. I mean, it was just common for us to practice and if we ended practice and weren’t going into films or the weight room, he stayed in the gym. Put his cones up and started to work on different things, with a coach, without a coach, with a graduate manager, and work on his shooting. Even if we went to weights and to film, he always came back out.

We got to the point where we went on the road and we took the cones with us because he wanted to work on and set the cones up at the walk throughs after we’d have our walk through practice because he constantly wanted to make his ball handling better, not only his shooting but his ball handling.

He’s just got a force of purpose right now that’s incredible, and I think it’s just going to continue because I think that’s who he is. That’s his work ethic. It wasn’t anything that we did to push that work ethic. I think we helped intensify it, but he had it when he got here, and I think he’ll definitely have that in the NBA.

The Magic selected Victor Oladipo with the No. 2 pick in the NBA draft on Thursday.

Strengths: One of the most disruptive perimeter defenders in college basketball, Oladipo brings pride and intensity to every matchup. He’s also a plus-rebounder for his size, grabbing 6.3 per game last season. On the other end of the floor, Oladipo is a strong finisher in the open court. As Andy Glockner noted, he made 64.4 percent of his two-point field goal attempts this past season, a strong mark for any player, let alone a guard.

What Scouts Say: ”Love his makeup. Great worker. On defense, he plays like Tony Allen. He took very limited attempts to get that high [three-point] percentage. My question is, Has he had his big jump already of improvement? The fact that he’s a top-five pick is an indictment of this draft.”

The KD VI will drop first in D.C. on June 29, then will have a wider release on July 3.

MADE IN MARYLAND

Durant was born and raised in Seat Pleasant, Md., just outside of Washington, D.C. He honed his game after spending countless hours at the Seat Pleasant Activity Center, his home away from home. The rec center’s trademark teal and yellow colors, spotted on the center’s doormat by Chang on his first trip to Seat Pleasant in 2008, inspired the lead KD VI colorway launching globally July 3.

UPCOMING KD VI COLORWAYS

KD VI D.C. Preheat: The upper features a map of Washington, D.C., overlayed with a white graphic pattern inspired by machining lines of a wristwatch, all in a bold, bright color pattern. This shoe pays tribute to Durant’s hometown roots. Launch: June 29.

KD VI Meteorology: If Durant was not playing basketball, his dream occupation would be tracking weather as a meteorologist. Atomic red, olive and black are featured in a custom graphic mimicking Doppler radar mapping. Launch: Aug. 3.

KD VI NYC 66: When Durant scorched the Harlem blacktop and scored 66 points on Aug. 2, 2011, the world took notice. Despite the lockout, basketball didn’t stop for a 22-year-old Durant who’d play anyone at anytime. Launch: Aug. 17.

KD VI Bamboo: The power of nature and patience comes to life in Chinese bamboo. Typically after four consecutive years of delicate care, bamboo undergoes a transformation in its fifth year. This story parallels the growth of Durant’s game this past season, his fifth in the league. This special green shoe debuts during a summer when Durant will visit China. Launch: Sept. 14.

Erick Green has gone to 17 individual workouts since May. His final workout was Monday morning in Brooklyn, N.Y., where he met and practiced for the Nets.

“My strategy was, the more people that see him, the more people will like him,” agent Alex Saratsis,
He said he’s been fairly “consistent” during his 17 workouts. He said most workouts were organized the same way, with drills and skill work first and then 3-on-3 games with other draft hopefuls.
Green has played in those games against N.C. State’s Lorenzo Brown, St. Mary’s Matt Dellavedova, Detroit’s Ray McCallum and South Dakota State’s Nate Wolters.

Green, 6-foot-3 and 178 pounds, said his goal has been to show NBA teams he’s versatile, not just a scoring machine. He wants to prove he can be a true point guard and an all-around player.
That was one of his goals this spring when he spent time in Bowie, Md., working out with his AAU coach, Keith Stevens of Team Takeover, and fellow Takeover alum Victor Oladipo of Indiana.

“I can be more than a scorer,” said Green, whose 25 points per game for the Hokies last season led the nation. “Ballhandling, making plays, playing defense. A lot of teams have been impressed with my defense. On film they see my scoring. In person, they’re impressed with my defense.”

USA Basketball announced Tuesday that University of Pittsburgh freshman James Robinson (Mitchellville, Md./DeMatha Catholic H.S.) has been selected to complete its Men’s U19 National Team roster. Beginning this week (June 27-July 5), Team USA will compete in the FIBA Under-19 World Championship in Prague, Czech Republic. USA is currently in Prague and Robinson will join the team on Thursday for its opening round game against Ivory Coast.

Robinson replaces Syracuse’s Jerami Grant, and former Dematha teammate who is unable to participate after it was learned that he has been diagnosed with mononucleosis.

The FIBA U19 World Championship will feature 16 national teams from around the world. Team USA was placed into Group D along with China, Ivory Coast and Russia. In the preliminary round, Team USA will open against Ivory Coast on Thursday, then play China on Friday, June 28 and Russia on Saturday, June 29. The second round of the tournament is scheduled for July 1-3, followed by the quarterfinals, semifinals and the gold medal game (July 7).

This will be Robinson’s third stint with the USA National Team as last summer he was selected to play on the American squad that captured the FIBA Americas Under-18 championship with a perfect 5-0 record at Sao Sebastiao de Paraiso, Brazil. Robinson led the Americans in assist:turnover ratio (6.00), totaled 12 assists and averaged 4.4 points and 15.6 minutes in the five games. Team USA averaged 97.2 points per game and outscored its opponents by an average of 38.6 points per game. Robinson also represented Team USA in the 2012 Nike Hoop Summit game held in Portland, Ore. on April 7, 2012.

The four-star recruit says Georgetown, Indiana, Missouri, Temple and Villanova have shown the most interest, but he won't name five finalists until later this summer. The plan is to pick a winner in the fall.

Booth was offered by Maryland, but he says he and coach Mark Turgeon have a mutual understanding that Maryland won't be the place for him, due to the recent commitments the Terrapins have received.

One school that has recently increased its pursuit of Booth is Ohio State. The Buckeyes have yet to extend Booth a scholarship offer, but coach Thad Matta has expressed interest in reuniting Booth with his Gaels backcourt mate of the past three seasons, Buckeye-to-be Kameron Williams.

Whichever school inks Booth to a scholarship will be adding a player on pace to eclipse the 2,000-point mark in high school, a player who takes the most pride in defending the opponent's top offensive threat.

DJ Harvey is heading to DeMatha Catholic High School.
One of the top players in the class of 2017 out of Huntsville, Ala., Harvey will be transferring from Christ School (Arden, N.C.) to DeMatha next year.

Harvey said that there were two reasons for chosing DeMatha.
“Reputation and the coaching were big,” Harvey told SNY.tv. “Coach [Mike] Jones really knows what he is doing.”

Harvey, a 6-foot-6, 180-pound guard, started at the end of last year for Christ School as an eighth grader, helping them go 31-7 and get to the state semifinals. His breakout performance of the year was 13 points in the quarterfinal game against Charlotte Latin.
A bruising combo guard who could end up being able to defend three positions, Harvey has received interest from many of the ACC and SEC schools, as well as Ohio State, Lehigh and Wichita State.

The Suitland High School product's recovery from shoulder surgery was already going to be a notable story line over the summer. Now that the Terps did not land any of their backcourt transfer targets, leaving Peters and rising sophomore Seth Allen as the primary ball handlers, even more so.

"Roddy looked good today and I've heard he's been playing good in pick up. The players like him," Turgeon said.

Peters underwent shoulder surgery back in December after suffering an injury last summer. Whenever Turgeon and his coaching staff are not  teaching the District Heights native the on-court finer points, the 6-foot-4 Peters will be enduring strength training with the program's director of basketball performance, Kyle Tarp.

"His body is bad right now," Turgeon said of Peters. "Six months of being in rehab for his shoulder, he's weak and out of shape, but Kyle gets him for 12 weeks this summer and another four weeks before the season starts. I imagine Roddy's body is going to look a lot different come October than it does right now. He's a competitive kid and he works hard. He's going to be fine."

Former Tennessee point guard Bobby Maze will be holding a celebrity basketball game on June 22nd at Hardin Valley Academy at 3 p.m. NBA players Kevin Durant, Michael Beasley, Demarcus Cousins, and several others are expected to attend, along with some of Maze's former Tennessee teammates.

The game will be played in memory of Maze's cousin Jamar Board. Board was a popular Washington D.C. area streetball player known as "Silent Assassin."

Tickets are $20 in advance or $25 at the door. Maze has been busy since his playing days at Tennessee.

"Basketball, it took me places I've never ever been or never even dreamed of going," Maze said.

Maze has made a name for himself playing professionally in Europe and Asia. He has played in small 2,000 seat gyms and huge 25,000 seat arenas in countries such as China, Belarus, Cyprus, Lithuania and Greece. The point guard won a league championship and Finals MVP award in 2012 with Belarusian team Minsk-2006

Every summer Maze returns to his roots in the Washington D.C. area to play in the Goodman League with former AAU teammate Kevin Durant.

"It's an outdoor league, they call it Inside the Gates and man it's just about being tough," Maze said. "You're in a rough atmosphere, you're in one of the toughest parts of Washington D.C. in Berry Farms and you're gonna play against some of the best streetballers to college to NBA players."

Berry Farms is just five minutes up the road from Maze's childhood home in Suitland, Md. just outside Washington D.C. Maze even traveled with the Goodman League during the NBA lockout to play in star-studded games across the country.

Thon Maker a rising sophomore is a chiseled basketball specimen with a body well ahead of his years. The 7-foot 16 year old just completed his freshman year at the Carlisle School in Martinsville (VA) and never looked out of place on the court with some of the elite players in the country, many two years older than the native of Sudan who has spent the majority of his life in Australia before coming to the U.S. in 2011.

Maker possesses an intimidating wing span, despite a thin frame he is more than willing to bang in the post, but as he continues to mature physically he will only get stronger…and better. Still raw offensively as he has only been playing organized basketball a few years after mainly being a soccer player down under. College coaches are drooling over his potential.

MARYLAND, GEORGETOWN, KANSAS, and a few others,” said Maker of his recruitment, quickly adding that he was not currently too involved in the recruiting process as things are very early in the process. He mentioned his guardian, Edward Smith, knew all of the schools in the process. A recent Zagsblog article on Maker also mentioned KENTUCKY showing interest and offers from ARIZONA, LSU, MEMPHIS, MIAMI, NORTH CAROLINA STATE, OHIO STATE and VIRGINIA in addition to the trio Maker mentioned himself.

The 6-foot-3 guard out of Bishop O’Connell and the DC Assault program Melo Trimble showed off a good handle, high basketball IQ and poise beyond his years. The floor general showed he is solid with either his left or right hand, possesses a good build and his athletic ability will allow him to play comfortably at the next level. He consistently stood out in his game, draining some pure three-pointers and hustling back t play defense consistently. The Terrapins got a good one!

Donte Grantham plans to attend Hargrave Military Academy in Chatham, Va., which pretty much puts his recruitment on hold for another year. He also considered playing this season at Brewster Academy, another prep school in Wolfeboro, N.H.

"It's closer to home,'' Grantham said of Hargrave, "where I can come home more.''
Before the signing period expired, the schools most often mentioned as possible destinations for Grantham included WVU, Clemson, George Mason, James Madison, Radford and Marshall.
When asked Thursday what schools he was currently in touch with, Grantham listed Indiana, Texas, Virginia, Washington, Miami (Fla.), Maryland, Clemson and Cincinnati.

Grantham said he'll have more schools looking at him when his traveling AAU team, D.C. Assault, competes in a July tournament in Las Vegas.
He seemed resigned to going through the entire recruiting process again, but said it didn't feel right making a commitment over the spring.

"I think it's because the big-time schools came [recruiting] this year,'' he said, "and it all happened late. I didn't have a long time to make my decision on official visits or anything. I only took one to Clemson, so I didn't have time, really.
"I think a prep school will give me time to visit schools and think it out instead of rushing somewhere I didn't want to go. A prep school will only help me get better.''

The WV state player of the year and first-team all-state captain led Martinsburg to its third Class AAA basketball championship in March.

Grantham became Martinsburg's first player to score more than 1,000 points and grab more than 500 rebounds for a career. He finished with 1,067 points and topped 600 rebounds.
He averaged 18.3 points per game and 9.1 rebounds per game in leading Martinsburg to a 24-2 record and state title.

Grantham scored 20 points and grabbed 17 rebounds in the state championship game.

That whole “locally grown” movement finally has hit Maryland.
It was extraordinarily significant this past week when Dion Wiley of Team Takeover—a newer power among D.C. Metro club teams— joined Romelo Tremble of DC Assault in committing to join the Terps for 2014.

According to ESPN recruiting analyst Dave Telep, Romelo Trimble is a top-50 talent and Dion Wiley is in the top-25 neighborhood. With top-50 point guard Roddy Peters joining the Maryland program from DC Assault this fall, it is clear there has been a revolution in the recruiting process under coach Mark Turgeon.

The DMV region—DC, Maryland, Northern Virginia—has produced a consensus first or second-team All-American for eight consecutive seasons.

AQUILLE CARR - ADIDAS EUROCAMP 2013 UPDATE - ALL-MET ELITE

AQUILLE CARR
 ADIDAS EUROCAMP 2013
UPDATE
 ALL-MET ELITE

PRINCETON DAY ACADEMY
LAUREL MD.

Aquille Carr is a high school prospect from Princeton Day in Maryland, and is the rare Eurocamp participant from the United States. Carr is here on the advice of his agent, in order to try to impress the international community enough to earn a spot in the Euro League next season.

Carr is listed at 5’6″, though he’s even smaller than that in person. For better or worse, the Nate Robinson  comparisons will be inevitable due to the way he plays the guard position, using his speed and athleticism to try to get into the paint to create for himself or his teammates.

Carr showed confidence in handling the ball while pressured defensively, but he struggled on the opposite end of the floor to slow the bigger and stronger players he was matched up against at the point guard position.

He managed to remain positive throughout a first day which may have been tougher than expected, and consistently exhibited the qualities of a good teammate while on the bench.

It’s important to the people in charge of the adidas Eurocamp operation to provide as legitimate a platform as possible for NBA teams to evaluate international draft prospects. That’s why both the way they measure players and the testing that they put them through in Treviso are not just similar to those done in the states at the pre-draft combine in Chicago — they’re one and the same.

Aquille Carr measured just 5’4.5″ without shoes, but was tested as having the highest vertical jump — 33 inches — out of all of the camp participants.

OXON HILL MD.

New Orleans Pelicans coach Monty Williams has accepted an offer to be an assistant with the U.S. men's national team, a source with knowledge of the decision said Monday.

Williams' star is rising in spite of two rough seasons after all-stars Chris Paul and David West left New Orleans. He's 94-136 overall, but went 46-36 in his first season, guiding the then-Hornets to a first-round playoff berth.

Williams is known as one of the game's brightest rising stars, a defensive-minded coach and excellent communicator.
