MAXPREPS PRESEASON 2012-2013 MARYLAND FAB 5 TEAMS - ALL-MET ELITE

MAXPREPS PRESEASON 2012-2013
MARYLAND
FAB 5
ALL-MET ELITE
PHIL BOOTH
MOUNT ST JOSEPH HS.
BALTIMORE MD.

1. St. Frances Academy (Baltimore)
Head coach: Nick Myles
2011-12 finish: 21-9, MIAA A semifinals

The Panthers possess one of the best players in the state in junior
Dwayne Morgan (6-7, 205, F), who is drawing interest from colleges around the country. Morgan, who transferred from City College, is a true athlete who can play around the rim as well as shoot the basketball from the floor. He's accompanied by fellow junior Tommy Heard (6-3, 185, F), a solid wing player in his own right. St. Frances will also receive contributions from Tevon Saddler (6-4, 200, F), Maurice White (6-3, 175, G) and Emmerson Atkins (6-6, 200, F).

2. Mount St. Joseph (Baltimore)
Head coach: Pat Clatchey
2011-12 finish: 28-7, MIAA A runners-up
The Gaels are a high flying team that can flat out shoot the ball. Their strength is their backcourt, led by
Kameron Williams (6-2, 185, G) and junior Phil Booth, (6-4, 185, G). Mount St. Joseph also has some size for opposing teams to deal with in Graham Seering (6-7, 200, F) and Zander Wear (6-10, 220, C). The Gaels can beat teams inside but they can also work the perimeter well too.

3. Montrose Christian (Rockville)
Head coach: Stu Vetter
2011-12 finish: 22-3

Montrose Christian has a loaded roster once again, featuring Ishmail Wainright (6-6, 200, F), who recently verbally committed to Baylor. Junior Therence Mayimba (6-7, 200 F) is a strong wing player who has a well-rounded skill set. Down low, Montrose Christian has two big men it can use in senior Mark Williams (6-8, 230, C)and sophomore Taron Oliver (6-9, 230, C).
Seniors Charles Tucker Jr. (6-0, 170, G) and Dane Pepper (6-1, 185, G) will be counted on as well.

4. North Point (Waldorf)
Head coach: Jimmy Ball
2011-12 finish: 23-3, MPSSAA 4A semifinals

Not many teams are rising the way North Point has the past couple of seasons. The Eagles went from being an afterthought to one of the state's powers, reaching the state championship game in the last two years (winning the 2010-11 tournament). For the Eagles, their success begins with seniors
Marquis Wright (5-10, 165, G) and Naim Muhammad (6-4,180, F), two players that have been the backbone of this North Point team the last few years.

5.
Dunbar (Baltimore)
Head coach: Cyrus Jones
2011-12 finish: 24-3, MPSSAA 1A champions

The Poets were an unknown bunch compared to the giants of Baltimore basketball to start the 2011-12 season. Then they took the state by storm, beating the heavyweights and winning a record-tying 14th state title. The Poets lost a lot of senior leaders from the 2011 team but are replacing them with some big-name transfers. Daxter Miles (6-2, 165, G), who was with IMG Academy in Florida last season, returns to Dunbar for his senior season. Kamau Stokes (5-11, 155, G), a transfer from John Carroll, also figures to aid the Poets in a big way. Never short of ball handlers, Keandre Gibson (5-9, 160, G) is another option for the Poets this year on the court. Allen Costley (6-5, 180, F) and Trevis Buckhanon (6-7, 190, F) will be looked upon inside as this Dunbar roster is one of the most loaded in recent memory.

Hornets point guard Greivis Vasquez had perhaps his best game of the season Monday night, especially considering the competition.
Vasquez had 25 points and 10 assists in outdueling Chris Paul and leading the Hornets to a 105-98 victory over the Clippers in Los Angeles. The victory snapped a seven-game losing streak.
Two games previously, Vasquez also had 25 points, along with 14 assists, but the Hornets lost at Phoenix.

Wednesday night, the Hornets will be going against a team in which Vasquez had his best moment this season. Vasquez made a driving layup at the buzzer to beat the Jazz 88-86 at the Arena on Oct. 2, New Orleans’ second game of the season.
Vasquez had 13 points and 10 assists in the first game against Utah.

“He’s underrated,” Jazz point guard Mo Williams said. “First of all, he’s a big point guard, and you have to keep him out of the lane.
“And he’s crafty. He can score on you. He reminds me a lot of (former Houston Rockets point guard) Sam Cassell.”

“We have to play at a fast pace,” Vasquez said. “We have to play fast, get into our sets faster, run into the pick and roll faster. When we play at a faster pace, we can score the ball.
“But I have to take better care of the ball.”

BATTLE 4 ATLANTIS
2012

Quinn Cook directed No. 5 Duke on its run to the championship of the Battle 4 Atlantis.
The sophomore guard scored 11 of his 15 points in the final 7:46, including the Blue Devils' last eight of the game, and they beat No. 2 Louisville 76-71 for the title.

"Respect is not something you can give. It's earned," Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski said. "I think since the Georgia State game, Quinn has earned the respect of everyone. What he did in the Kentucky game, everyone talks about a kid getting confidence. It's when a team has confidence in its point guard that you take off. This team has great confidence in Quinn and he has earned it."

Cook, who had six assists and just four turnovers against Louisville's pressure defense, was 4 of 8 from the field and made all six of his free throws. He started his closing run when he took a long inbounds pass from Mason Plumlee and scored to give Duke a 70-68 lead with 1:14 left. Every time the Cardinals scored, Cook answered. His biggest hoop was a running jumper with 3 seconds left on the shot clock that made it 72-67 with 27 seconds to go.

"I thought that play was one of the separators," Krzyzewski said.

Cook said the "coaches get mad at us for not shooting our shots. I hit the 3 and that got me going. Then I hit the runner. I just wanted to stay aggressive. I was open so I shot the ball."

AQUILLE CARR UPDATE - ALL-MET ELITE

AQUILLE CARR
 UPDATE
 ALL-MET ELITE

Baltimore prep basketball star Aquille Carr is on the move again, this time back to Maryland, where he plans to play his senior season at Princeton Day Academy in Beltsville, said the school’s coach, Van Whitfield.
Just last week, the two-time Baltimore Sun All-Metro Player of the Year enrolled at Arlington Country Day, a private basketball power in Jacksonville, Fla., according to that school’s coach, Rex Morgan.
But Whitfield said Carr merely visited Arlington Country Day before deciding it was too far from home.
“I think what I’ve learned about Aquille is that he feels a real strong bond to his family,” said Whitfield, a Baltimore native. “He wants to make substantial changes in his life, but he could not stomach the idea of doing it so far away in Florida.”
Whitfield said Carr enrolled at Princeton Day Academy, a private school of 58 students with a powerful basketball team, on Monday and will start classes there Wednesday morning.
Carr’s parents could not immediately be reached for comment.
Morgan said Tuesday that Carr was conditionally enrolled at Arlington Day last week but that his full academic transcript never arrived at the Florida school. “He went home over the weekend and decided to stay up there,” Morgan said. “I wish him well. What I heard from someone around him is that he didn’t want to leave home.”
He said that from his brief conversations with Carr, he gleaned that the player cares deeply about his young daughter.
“I have a very strong sense that Aquille wants to change and to address his academic profile,” Whitfield said. “He wants to be challenged and to be prepared to be a college student. He feels he was given a gift, that God presented him an opportunity. And he doesn’t want to miss it.”
The latest transfer continues a chaotic year for Carr, 19, who has verbally committed to play at Seton Hall next season.
In March, Carr led Patterson High to a Maryland 3A state championship. But only a few weeks after the state title game, he transferred to St. Patrick High in Elizabeth, N.J. to work on his academic transcript. He remained there for little more than a month, returning to Patterson in May.
Then came word that he was Florida-bound, though neither Carr nor his parents commented on the transfer to Arlington Country Day.
Princeton Day, which bills itself as “Maryland’s first all-digital high school,” has emerged as a Washington-area basketball power under Whitfield, who has consistently attracted Division I prospects from other schools.
Carr, a 5-foot-7 guard who has built a national following with his blink-quick dribble moves and sensational dunks, is one of the highest-profile players to join Whitfield.
The coach said he first spoke with Carr about attending Princeton Day two years ago after Carr befriended one of Whitfield’s players at a summer showcase camp.
‘I don’t think basketball even came up,” Whitfield said of his conversations with Carr. “He really wants to get himself prepared to do college work.”
The coach said Carr is on track to be eligible to play as a college freshman, with a qualifying SAT score in hand. “He only needs to complete some core courses, which is the case for most seniors in the United States,” Whitfield said.
He added that he expects Carr to grow as a student, given the individual attention he’ll receive at Princeton Day.

THE BOSTON CELTICS KRIS JOSEPH - ALL-MET ELITE

KRIS JOSEPH
ALL-MET ELITE
ARCHBISHOP CARROLL HS.
WASHINGTON D.C.

Rigsby, a mother of four who immigrated to Montreal from Trinidad and Tobago wasn’t ready to have her youngest leave the house just yet.
“He was to me a little bit too immature for that environment,” Rigsby said. “It was an unknown to me in the first place. Leaving home to go to school at that age.”
A year later and after more research, Rigsby understood that sending her baby to a foreign country was the best thing for him. Rigsby gave the OK for Kris to attend Archbishop Carroll High School in Washington, D.C.
“She realized I could do some great things,” Kris said.
In the new environment, Kris flourished. He helped turn around Archbishop Carroll’s fortunes on the court and led the once dormant team to a 26-11 record his senior year. He also starred for a local AAU powerhouse, the D.C. Assault. Playing Division I basketball was soon a legitimate possibility. But where?
“I got a call from an AAU coach, Keith Stevens of Team Takeover, about Kris after he moved,” Murphy, now the head coach at Eastern Michigan, said. “He said ‘I know you guys [Syracuse] like versatile forwards, you should take a look at him.’”
Murphy knew of Kris thanks to his brother who was playing at Michigan State University at the time. Maurice was a teammate of Maurice Ager. Murphy coached Ager in high school in Detroit. He said Kris used to play against college guys all the time.
“He liked Syracuse and we liked him.”

1. Hampton
Head coach: Walter Brower
2011-12 finish: 26-5, VHSL AAA state champions

Hampton could be well on its way to another state championship with senior and blue chip prospect Anthony Barber (6-2, 165, PG) back for his final year. The N.C. State commit is not only the best player in the state, but is among the best in the country. Complementing Barber is Jordan Baker (6-2, 170, SG), an Old Dominion commit, who scored 10 of his 13 points in the state championship in the final 8:30 of the contest. Sammie Royal (6-3, 190, F) came on strong toward the end of the 2011-12 season and is expected to be one of the Crabbers' top contributors once again.

2. Episcopal (Alexandria)
Head coach: Jim Fitzpatrick
2011-12 finish: 23-4, VISAA Division 1 runners-up

The Maroon are a scrappy bunch that came a point short of coming away with the 2011-12 VISAA championship. Episcopal makes up for its lack of top-tier talent with its ability to shoot the basketball. Senior Doug Chappell (6-2, 175, G) is a rising star who can score points in bunches. Senior Brennan McCann (5-10, 155, G) has deep range with his shot and can make teams pay from
outside the arc. Episcopal's not the flashiest team but it is one of the more efficient.

3. Cape Henry Collegiate (Virginia Beach)
Head coach: Mark Hall
2011-12 finish: 23-5, VISAA Division 2 champions

Cape Henry will be dangerous once again with Devon Hall (6-4, 205, G) returning for his season season. Hall, committed to Virginia, possesses good instincts on the floor and can distribute the ball to his teammates well. His big frame allows him to take defenders to the rim while creating contact. The Dolphins will also be the benefactors of what Malik Gray (6-5, 200, F) will bring to the table as an inside-outside forward that transferred from Woodside. Phil Leonard (6-6, 215, F) and Terry Morris (6-4, 190, F) will add valued senior leadership.

4. Petersburg
Head coach: Rick Hite
2011-12 finish: 16-10, VHSL AAA runners-up

A case could be made that Petersburg overachieved a season ago. But the Crimson Wave made it to the state championship before falling to Hampton 64-51. Replacing Frank Mason, now at Massanutten Military Academy, will be tough, but there is some young talent on this roster. Petersburg figures to get some senior leadership from Quadree Walker (6-5, 200, F), Earl Adams (6-2, 175, G) and Kai Haskett (5-11, 170, G). Junior James Byers (6-4, 200, F) will also add some size for this year's Crimson Wave squad.

5. Cosby (Midlothian)
Head coach: Ron Carr
2011-12 finish: 18-7, VHSL AAA first round

The Titans are poised for a breakout season in the state of Virginia, considering the team is laden with seniors. Led by Troy Caupain (6-2, 175, G), Cosby is looking to make a run this year that will get them deep into the postseason. Aiding Caupian is junior Jarek Frankovich (6-3, 215, F), a sharp-shooter who will look to fill the void that resulted in Evan Orzolek's departure.

AQUILLE CARR TRANSFERS TO ARLINGTON COUNTRY DAY - ALL-MET ELITE

 AQUILLE CARR
TRANSFERS TO ARLINGTON COUNTRY  DAY
 ALL-MET ELITE
BALTIMORE MD.

Baltimore’s top-ranked point guard, Aquille Carr, was looking for a new school. But at the time it seemed like a decision had not been made as to where he’d be transferring to. Reports today confirm that the Seton Hall bound recruit will not be spending his senior season in Charm City, and will instead head to Jacksonville, FL and suit up for Arlington Country Day. From the Baltimore Sun: “Aquille Carr, The Baltimore Sun’s All-Metro Player of the Year in boys basketball the last two seasons, will not play in Baltimore as a senior .Carr’s tangled path through youth stardom will continue at Arlington Country Day School, a private basketball power in Jacksonville, Fla., said the school’s coach, Rex Morgan.Morgan said Carr enrolled at Arlington Country Day on Wednesday and would begin classes there Thursday morning. Asked if he was excited to work with the high-flying guard, Morgan, a former Boston Celtics player, said “Oh yeah.”Attempts to reach Carr through his family were unsuccessful. The seven months since Carr led Patterson High to a Maryland 4A state championship have been a whirlwind of school transfers and legal trouble. Only a few weeks after the state title game, Carr transferred to St. Patrick High in Elizabeth, N.J., to work on his academic transcript. He remained there for little more than a month, returning to Patterson in May. He played in few summer basketball showcases, instead opting for summer school.

The Nike KD V iD marks the third year in a row Durant’s sigs are up for customization on the NIKEiD online platform, and today we see a preview of what’s in store with Thunder/Knicks, Bulls/Blazers and Christmas/China Jade colorups, each of which puts the previously unseen heel and midsole speckling to good use.  KD V iD’s will debut  Tuesday, November 6th.

WALE
ALL-MET ELITE

Wale has debuted plenty of sneakers before, this one perhaps making more sense than most thanks to his and Kevin Durant’s geographic connection. Pictured is Wale showing off his pair of the Nike KD V ‘DMV’, one of the first few colorways that should hit for the silhouette following the NIKE iD debut. The pair mixes in plenty of details paying tribute to the state of Maryland as well as the microcosm community of Washington DC within said state.
