The 14-and-under Virginia Venom AAU basketball team opened its season  by capturing championship medals at the 2012 Colonial Cup held at Williamsburg's Hornsby Middle School this past weekend.
The Venom completed a 4-0 sweep of  the eight-team tournament with wins against Richmond Metro, 42-40; the Richmond Warriors, 60-50; Toano Storm, 50-43; and the Richmond Warriors again, this time 50-45, in the championship game.
Fifty-two teams from different age groups competed over the weekend. The Venom's 4th grade team also finished runners-up in the 10-and-under bracket.
Both squads, along with the three Venom high-school teams, will compete in the touted Nike Youth Elite Invitational held at the Boo Williams Sportsplex March 23-25, followed by the Under Armour Invitational at VCU March 30-31.
