Chris Lykes (5-7/PG) Gonzaga
Lykes has been outstanding from the start. Early in conference play it appeared that Lykes may even run away with the award with outstanding performances against both St. John’s and DeMatha including a thriller at DeMatha where Lykes’ 30 helped hand DeMatha their 1st conference loss and their 1st home loss of the season. After a 38-point explosion over the weekend against O’Connell it’s going to be really hard to not give him the award.

Anthony Cowan Jr. (5-11/PG) St. John’s
Upon heaping early season praises upon Chris Lykes and Markelle Fultz, quietly (if you can call 21 ppg quiet) Anthony has put St. John’s atop the WCAC along with DeMatha and would be in sole possession of 1st place if not for a late season loss to Bishop O’Connell in which Cowan Jr. had a more than admirable 27 points. After not being selected for the McDonald’s All-American game Cowan went out and put 39 on McDonald’s All-American Kobi Simmons. With Lykes looking like the favorite to win the award this year, lets just hope they give the trophy out after the tournament…for everyone else’s sake, just ask Kobi Simmons.

Markelle Fultz (6-4/PG) DeMatha
Fultz has been by far DeMatha’s most consistent player carrying them to the top of the WCAC and coming up big down the stretch in some impressive victories including an overtime win over Chaminade on ESPN earlier in the season. DeMatha is a favorite again to win the WCAC title which means Fultz has more than an outside chance of repeating as Player of the Year.

VJ King (6-8/F) Paul VI
At nearly 23 ppg and a McDonald’s All-American Game and a Jordan Brand Classic selection King has more than made his case to be in the conversation, but with the Panthers currently standing at 10-7 in the WCAC it will be hard to outshine some of the candidates from better performing teams.

Nate Watson (6-8/F) Bishop O’Connell
Nate is one of 2 dark horses for the award this season. No player in the WCAC and few in the DMV have had as much of an impact in the paint as Watson and if the Knights’ guard play can really click O’Connell could find themselves taking home the hardware.

Jamir Moultrie (6-0/PG) Bishop McNamara
It’s hard to call a guy posting almost 18 ppg for a very solid McNamara squad a darkhorse. In many seasons and in many other leagues Moultrie would be an easy favorite for player of the year, but like King for PVI he may be a victim of a less than stellar record in the WCAC.

Individual play throughout the WCAC has been phenomenal this season but a few very talented young men have played at a level above most and therefore certainly deserve consideration as the top player in one of the nations top high school conferences.
