“In the midst of one of the most violent summers, in one of the nation’s most violent cities, Will has been a beacon of light for the youth in Baltimore,” said Joe Connelly, Tim’s brother and an assistant coach for the Washington Wizards who helped out at Barton’s Elite camp. “Not only talking the talk but by physically being present in the gyms, in the neighborhoods, showing love and serving as an inspiration in the process.”
“Will also decided to have an elite camp to teach the younger players things he wasn’t taught and told when he was at that same age,” said Dan Connelly, the brother of Tim and Joe, and another member of the Connelly basketball family who is currently an advanced scout for the Nuggets. “He wanted to pass along the knowledge he has learned from being a top five recruit, and now an NBA player. We were lucky enough to have Ron Johnson from Under Armour set up all the campers with gear from head to toe — which the players really enjoyed.”
Barton also started his own AAU team in Baltimore, Team Thrill, and often invites younger players to work out alongside him when he’s back home in the DMV area. “Will has worked extremely hard this summer to improve certain areas of his game, but the most rewarding part of this summer was watching him and his brother, Antonio, mature and help the kids throughout Baltimore,” Dan Connelly said. “From the riot cookout he helped host, to his elite camp, to starting his own AAU program, it’s been really cool to see him give back to where he came from, and in Baltimore that’s needed now more than ever.”
