WHY DION WILEY SHOULD SERIOUSLY RECONSIDER UMD ?
Playing Time.
Playing Time.
Dez Wells will be a senior unless he decides to declare for the draft.
Nick Faust will be a senior with 3 years off ACC experience.
Seth Allen will be a junior with 2 years of ACC experience and is a combo guard.
Jake Layman will be a junior with 2 years of ACC experience.
Roddy Peters will be a sophomore with 1 year of ACC experience.
Romelo Trimble will be an incoming freshman and McDonald's All-American with talks already of converting to point guard to pair with Seth Allen and Dez Wells on the perimeter.
Throw in Jared Nickens another incoming freshman perimeter player and you have a potential lack of game time minutes at the guard position during Dion Wiley's freshman year.
With college basketball ruined by the one and done players most programs have taken on a what have you done for me lately approach - so it won't be far-fetched to see additional guards highly recruited for the 2015-2016 season in which Wiley would then be a sophomore attempting to gain minutes after not playing much his freshman year.
Dion Wiley is to great of a player to have on the bench not playing significant minutes or contributing as a freshman.
Romelo Trimble is a great great player and will be given the opportunity to convert to point guard and possibly play major minutes his freshman year. It will be hard to justify not playing Trimble a Mcdonald's All-American one of the top 25 players in the country and a rarity as a UMD recruit. However that will surely stunt the development of Roddy Peters from Suitland HS. another public school local who was a highly recruited point guard last year despite injury - who effectively completed rehab and played some minor minutes and should be ready to go at 100% this upcoming season. Will he be given a chance to showcase his abilities to help UMD or will they go the experimental route?
Dion Wiley should also attempt to convert to point guard at the college level but won't be given the chance at UMD he may not be even given a chance to play the off guard position at UMD.
Why should he convert to point guard? His size, ball handling, shooting ability and athleticism would make him an elite point guard with pro potential once he has accepted the college programs benefits such as nutrition, conditioning, strength training, skill development, motivation, playing with better players, you are looking at a player with a huge huge upside an easier convert to point guard in my opinion - he could easily average 10 points, five rebounds, five assist a game or more with the occasional triple double here or there. He played point guard for Potomac this year as Randall Broddie at times played off the ball and found success by winning the Maryland 2A state championship. He could play off guard just as easily he has the shooting touch and size but would need minutes to develop at the college level in order to be the player he could be at either position and I am not sure his development will be a focus of UMD next season.
Romelo and Seth in the back court - same player - both combo guards with score first instincts - they will need chemistry and one or both will need to refine their game for UMD to be successful. A lot to ask of a freshman who will need to adjust to the college game and learn a new position. Imagine a backcourt of Roddy and Dion - maybe not at UMD but another school how good would that back court be?? UMD was also looking to recruit Tre Campbell from St. Johns who committed to Georgetown instead - which would have possibly created even more guard depth and less time at UMD for the incoming freshman. As far as pro potential Dion Wiley has it so does Roddy Peters but will either be able to showcase their abilities while playing at UMD?????? Where the focus is clearly on stockpiling local talent because the DC, MD, Northern VA area is a hotbed of basketball talent, and part of a coaches success is often viewed by how many great players they can keep in state. OH the ones who got away Carmelo Anthony, Kevin Durant, Michael Beasley, Rudy Gay, hell even Donte Green leave a bitter taste in the mouth of everyone involved with recruiting in the area.
Hopefully it isn't too late for Dion to reconsider another school where he can learn, develop, and win without having to sit the bench as a freshman, sophomore, junior, senior.
