Beck is averaging 11.9 points per game this season and is the second-highest scoring freshman in the America East Conference.

 

He recorded his first 20-point game three games into the season, tallying a game-high 27 in a victory at Cornell.

 

Beck’s bravado was forged at the City of Bowie Gymnasium, a place young players like Beck go just to play basketball.

 

There’s no weight room. No Pilates classes. It’s basketball non-stop. During summer, people stay there all day, only taking breaks to grab food at the Bowie Town Center next door.

 

Someone was always waiting to play, so you needed to win to stay on the court.

 

“When your team loses, you probably won’t play a game for like five or six games,” Beck said. “When you’re playing with a lot of competitiveness and a lot of heart, it’s almost like that comes off when you’re playing in a high school basketball or a middle school basketball game. It comes off in college now. You’ve got to play with that competitiveness every single time.”

 

Maret boys basketball coach Garrett O’Donnell is one of Beck’s proudest supporters. Beck led the team to a 24-4 record as a senior while averaging 12.3 points and 7.0 assists per game.

 

“College coaches were looking at him and they were like, ‘We don’t know about his shot.’ He proved them wrong,” O’Donnell said. “They were like, ‘We don’t know about his size.’ That hasn’t seemed to be a problem. They overlooked his heart and his work ethic. He is a warrior.”
