WASHINGTON WIZARD - JOHN WALL - DONATES $400K to D.C. Homeless Children's Charity - ALL-MET ELITE

A D.C. center for homeless children got a surprise visit this morning from Washington Wizards point guard John Wall — and a $400,000 donation.
Bright Beginnings, an early childhood development and learning organization that serves around 162 children a day, announced the contribution in a news release. The money from Wall will help the center open its second planned facility in Ward 8, which will serve 100 additional children and their families and is expected to open in 2017.
“Support from individuals like Mr. Wall gives Bright Beginnings the encouragement to continue to provide comprehensive services for homeless children in the District of Columbia," wrote Bright Beginnings Executive Director Dr. Betty Jo Gaines in a statement announcing the gift. "It is evident that John Wall is sensitive and concerned about the plight of homeless children in DC and he wants these children to succeed.”

WASHINGTON WIZARDS NEW PRACTICE FACILITY GOOD OR BAD FOR WASHINGTON D.C. - ALL-MET ELITE

WASHINGTON WIZARDS
 NEW PRACTICE FACILITY
 GOOD OR BAD
FOR
WASHINGTON D.C. ?
 ALL-MET ELITE

Mayor Bowser announced last week a tentative deal with the company that owns the Wizards and Mystics to build a $56.3 million sports and entertainment complex on the east campus of the former St. Elizabeths hospital near the Congress Heights Metro. The District would absorb about 90 percent of the cost while Ted Leonsis, majority owner of Monumental Sports & Entertainment, would pay $5 million (the equivalent of lease payments over 19 years) and commit to $10 million in community investments. Under the plan, the Wizards would practice in a new state-of-the-art training facility, and the Mystics would play in a 5,000-seat arena that would also be used for non-sports events, including concerts.

Why is a profitable sports operation putting so little capital into the venture? How does the public benefit from professional basketball players having new practice facilities? There’s also the question of whether, if the District is willing to invest tens of millions of dollars in Congress Heights, is this the best use, or if some other facility would better serve the needs of Ward 8 residents.

Thunder general manager Sam Presti said Wednesday.

"He's been playing without restriction, 5-on-5 and competing as normal," Presti said at his preseason news conference. "With that said, as any of our players coming off injury, we're going to be watching and managing practice, recovery time; we're going to be watching. But as far as limitations, he doesn't have any."

"He feels great. Looks great. It's great to have him back on the floor," Presti said. "Happy for him because he's been so committed and so disciplined to that process of getting back on the floor."

Indiana's 2016 recruiting class doubled in size Saturday morning, with the commitment of Huntington (W.V.) Prep guard Curtis Jones, a longtime target for the Hoosiers. Jones, who also plays his AAU basketball in the same Boo Williams program as current Hoosiers Rob Johnson and Troy Williams, will be expected to add depth to a back court that loses Yogi Ferrell, Nick Zeisloft and perhaps James Blackmon Jr. (to the NBA) after this season.

Jones is as reputed for his shooting ability as he is for his ball handling, and he projects to impact with both at IU. Working at that position under IU coach Tom Crean was a motivating factor for Jones. "The biggest thing with Indiana is coach Crean's history with guards of making them better," Jones told The Star's Kyle Neddenriep this summer. "He's made average guards into pros and great guards even better. That is a major reason and also the possible chance to play early."

Temple landed its second commitment Sunday afternoon in the form of point guard Alani Moore. The 5-foot-10 Moore, a Washington, D.C. native who attends Friendship Collegiate Academy announced the news via Twitter.

Moore, rated as a three-star prospect by Rivals.com, played for the DC Premier grassroots program this summer and also participated in the Under Armour All-American Camp.

That’s where Moore’s commitment comes into play for a program looking to get back to making annual NCAA tournament appearances after missing out in each of the last two seasons. Moore’s court vision and quickness on the ball will help Temple offensively when he arrives on campus in 2016.

“In the midst of one of the most violent summers, in one of the nation’s most violent cities, Will has been a beacon of light for the youth in Baltimore,” said Joe Connelly, Tim’s brother and an assistant coach for the Washington Wizards who helped out at Barton’s Elite camp. “Not only talking the talk but by physically being present in the gyms, in the neighborhoods, showing love and serving as an inspiration in the process.”

“Will also decided to have an elite camp to teach the younger players things he wasn’t taught and told when he was at that same age,” said Dan Connelly, the brother of Tim and Joe, and another member of the Connelly basketball family who is currently an advanced scout for the Nuggets. “He wanted to pass along the knowledge he has learned from being a top five recruit, and now an NBA player. We were lucky enough to have Ron Johnson from Under Armour set up all the campers with gear from head to toe — which the players really enjoyed.”

Barton also started his own AAU team in Baltimore, Team Thrill, and often invites younger players to work out alongside him when he’s back home in the DMV area. “Will has worked extremely hard this summer to improve certain areas of his game, but the most rewarding part of this summer was watching him and his brother, Antonio, mature and help the kids throughout Baltimore,” Dan Connelly said. “From the riot cookout he helped host, to his elite camp, to starting his own AAU program, it’s been really cool to see him give back to where he came from, and in Baltimore that’s needed now more than ever.”
