Kevin Durant “The Backpack Baller” by Brad Graham - ALL-MET ELITE

Kevin Durant
“The Backpack Baller”
by
Brad Graham
 ALL-MET ELITE

MONTROSE CHRISTIAN HS.
ROCKVILLE MD.

Kevin Durant’s stardom is unlike any other. He doesn’t go for that over-the-top swagger or diva-like tendencies, but instead chooses to keep within his inner circles while playing at a small market franchise.

In just 25 years, Durant’s made quite a name for himself in the sport of basketball, and he hasn’t even scratched the surface of his professional prime in the NBA. Brad Graham, a KD fanatic, went forward with The Backpack Baller – a 250-page book detailing KD’s quarter century on and off the court.

What make’s Brad’s project so darn cool is that the book features over twenty pages solely dedicated to KD’s sneakers with Nike – everything from his signature line to the choice models he wore during International play.

The complete hard-cover costs $35, but Brad needs your help in making it happen. You can contribute to Brad’s Kickstarter campaign in various amounts, and a $35 contribution will get you one hardcover copy of the book!
Be sure to show your support by visiting the Kickstarter page, following him on Twitter and Blog, and share with your friends if you’d like for this project to get completed.

Beck is averaging 11.9 points per game this season and is the second-highest scoring freshman in the America East Conference.

He recorded his first 20-point game three games into the season, tallying a game-high 27 in a victory at Cornell.

Beck’s bravado was forged at the City of Bowie Gymnasium, a place young players like Beck go just to play basketball.

There’s no weight room. No Pilates classes. It’s basketball non-stop. During summer, people stay there all day, only taking breaks to grab food at the Bowie Town Center next door.

Someone was always waiting to play, so you needed to win to stay on the court.

“When your team loses, you probably won’t play a game for like five or six games,” Beck said. “When you’re playing with a lot of competitiveness and a lot of heart, it’s almost like that comes off when you’re playing in a high school basketball or a middle school basketball game. It comes off in college now. You’ve got to play with that competitiveness every single time.”

Maret boys basketball coach Garrett O’Donnell is one of Beck’s proudest supporters. Beck led the team to a 24-4 record as a senior while averaging 12.3 points and 7.0 assists per game.

“College coaches were looking at him and they were like, ‘We don’t know about his shot.’ He proved them wrong,” O’Donnell said. “They were like, ‘We don’t know about his size.’ That hasn’t seemed to be a problem. They overlooked his heart and his work ethic. He is a warrior.”

Montverde Academy, the defending tournament and national champions and ranked No. 2 in USA Today’s Super 25, defeated No. 11 Fairfax (Va.) Paul VI 58-53 in a game that ended at 12:20 a.m after tipping off shortly after 9 p.m.
Montverde led 26-11 after the first quarter but was outscored 14-8 by the Paul VI Panthers in the third quarter.

Montverde led by just two points, 55-53, with 8.7 seconds remaining.
Paul VI defeated Montverde Academy by two points last January for a tournament championship in Springfield, Mo.

Paul VI senior forward Marcus Derrickson, a future Georgetown Hoya, scored 14 points and grabbed four rebounds in the Classic final.
“They were more focused than we were,” Derrickson said of the Eagles. “They came out fast and hot, hitting everything.”

Montverde Academy improved to 10-0, while Paul VI fell to 8-1. The teams could meet again next month in that same Springfield, Mo., tournament.
“It was important for us to play,” Paul VI coach Glen Farello said. “It was a great opportunity. We made the best of it.”

PAUL VI. HS.
FAIRFAX VA.
MARCUS DERRICKSON

1. Oak Hill Academy (Mouth of Wilson)
Head coach: Steve Smith
2012-13 finish: 33-6

The Warriors are a national high school standard, and this year won’t be any different. Oak Hill begins the season as the No. 4 team in the country by MaxPreps. Two starters are back: Rokas Gustys (6-8, Sr., F) and Terrence Phillips (5-11, Jr., G). Oak Hill will highlight North Carolina State commits Cody Martin and Caleb Martin, a pair of 6-6 senior forwards. Wake Forest commit Shelton Mitchell (6-4, Sr., G), Virginia commit B.J. Stith (6-5, Sr., G) and Rodney Miller (6-11, So., C) give coach Smith something to be excited about. “We are excited; we’re a versatile team that can go big or go small,” Smith said. “We have good depth. Our schedule is very formidable, as it always is. We’ll find out in December, with the meat of our schedule, playing in Kentucky twice and the Chic-fil-A Classic.”

2. Paul VI (Fairfax)
Head coach: Glenn Farello
2012-13 finish: 23-9, lost in VISAA quarterfinals to Liberty Christian

The Panthers return four starters: Georgetown commit Marcus Derrickson (6-7, Jr., F), who averaged 14 points per game, UNC Greensboro commit Quadree Smith (6-7, Sr., F) and Kevin Dorsey (6-0, Jr., PG). Joshua Reaves (6-4, Jr., G) could be the fifth starter. Depth comes from Curtis Jones (6-2, So., G), Tyler Scanlon (6-6, So., F) and Evan Taylor (6-4, Sr., G). “Nine of our top 10 are back, and we’re still young, with only two seniors, we do return a lot of experience,” coach Glenn Farello said.

3. Cape Henry Collegiate (Virginia Beach)
Head coach: Mark Hall
2012-13 finish: 29-4, lost in VISAA Division I semifinals

The Dolphins return a loaded team that includes James Paige (6-5, Sr., G), Ayron Hutton (6-3, Sr., G), Chris Clarke (6-6, Jr., F) and Andrew Langston (6-2, Sr., G). Transfer Marcus Evans (6-2, Jr., G) could have a big impact. “On paper, I feel we have a legitimate shot to do some great things, but you still have to play the games,” coach Mark Hall said.

4. Carlisle (Martinsville)
Head coach: Jason Niblett
2012-13 finish: 23-2, lost in VISAA semifinals

All five starters return: Eric Johnson (6-2, Sr., G), Malcolm N'diaye (6-2, Sr., G), Kevin Cuesta (6-5, Sr., F), Thon Maker (7-0, So., C) and Kaleb Johnson (6-6, Jr., G). Depth will come from Yesid Mosquera (6-5, So., F) and Mature Maker (6-10, Fr. C), Thon’s younger brother, who is currently tied up with some eligibility paperwork. Niblett said he wasn’t opposed to pairing the Maker brothers together — a high school team with a 7-footer and a 6-10 freshman. “We’re young, but return a lot of experience from last year and we’re just trying to plug away,” Niblett said. “We stepped up and are playing more of a national schedule this year.”

5. Bishop O'Connell (Arlington)
Head coach: Joe Wootten
2012-13 finish: 27-7, lost in VISAA Division I state title game

Wootten, the son of former DeMatha legendary coach Morgan Wootten, returns Maryland-bound Romelo Trimble (6-2, Sr., G), Ako Adams (6-2, So., G), Jamaal King (5-8, Jr., G), Kelgin Blevins (6-6, Sr., F) and Stephen Osu (6-9, Sr., C).

 1. DeMatha (Hyattsville)
Head coach: Mike Jones
2012-13 finish: 14-16, lost in the WCAC quarterfinals

The Stags had 11 games decided in the last 30 seconds and lost nine of them for a team that started two freshmen and two sophomores. Three starters return: Terrell Allen (6-2, Jr., G), Joe Hampton (6-7, So., F) and Wagner commit Corey Henson (6-2, Sr, G). The newcomer is D.J. Harvey (6-6, Fr., F) and Brock Ruble (6-10, Sr., C), a major football recruit, will need a month to find his basketball legs. Alani Moore (5-10, So., G) had some starts last year and watch for Jaelin Grant (6-7, Jr., F), whose older brothers play at Notre Dame and Syracuse. “We are still are very young, but our youth is experienced,” Stags coach Mike Jones said. “A lot of the young guys got a lot of playing time and they took their lumps last year. Our schedule is going to be crazy, but we’re ready to accept the challenges.”

2. Montrose Christian (Rockville)
Head coach: Bryan Bartley
2012-13 finish: 19-5, lost to Findlay Prep in ESPN National High School Invitational quarterfinals

Allonzo Trier (6-4, Jr., G), Patrick McCaw (6-6, Sr., F), Raymond Doby (6-7, Sr., F) and Justice Bartley (6-5, Sr., F) coach Bryan Bartley’s son, are the top players back. Jarrell Brantley (6-7, Sr., F) and AJ Cabbagestalk (5-11, Sr., G) will play major roles. “I think the key is chemistry and our better basketball will come in the second half of the season because we’re going to come together early,” coach Bartley said. “We want to do better than what we’ve done in the past. Our schedule is tough, tougher than what they’ve had the last five or six years.”

3. Riverdale Baptist (Upper Marlboro)
Head coach: Louis Wilson
2012-13 finish: 26-10, Capital Beltway Athletic Association champions

The Crusaders return Louisville-bound Chinanu Onuaku (6-10, Sr., C), who averaged 9.6 points per game, 11 rebounds per game and six blocks per game, and he’ll be joined by Taron Oliver (6-9, Jr., F), who transferred in from Montrose Christian and Alexander Long (6-8, Sr., F) - which could be the largest front court in the country. Making up the backcourt will be JeDon Young (6-2, Jr., G), who averaged 22 ppg and is a transfer in from Evangel Christian (Va.), Devin Steele (5-8, Sr. G) will be in the running for the point with Kenneth Wormley (6-3, Jr., G). John Hightower (6-3, Sr., G) can add instant offense, along with Aproni Jones (6-3, Sr., G), a transfer from Wilson (Washington, D.C.) and Eton Thomas (6-2, Sr., G). “This year’s team is a little different than last year’s team,” coach Wilson said. “You can’t focus on one scorer. Our offensive attack can score from anywhere. We’re deep and we’re ready with one of the toughest schedules in the country.” The Crusaders will play St. Anthony’s (Jersey City, N.J.) in the Primetime Shootout on Feb. 8.

4. Mount St. Joseph (Baltimore)
Head coach: Pat Clatchey
2012-13 finish: 31-8, won Baltimore Catholic League Tournament

The Gaels return three starters: Villanova-bound Phil Booth (6-4, Sr., G), Jacksonville commit Jaylen Adams (6-0, Sr., G) and Kyle Doran (6-5, Sr., F). Towson signee Jordan McNeil (6-5, Sr., G) and Doc Barnes (6-5, So., G) will also start. Graham Seering (6-7, Sr., F) is an inside presence and Zander Wear (6-11, Sr., C) who’s made considerable improvement since last year. Randy Miller (6-2, So., G) is an energy player who could be a mid-major recruit by the time he graduates. “I think we have a chance to be highly competitive and have a successful season,” said Pat Clatchey, whose team will be playing in a new $18 million facility called the Smith Center.

5. St. James
Head coach: Dan Prete
2012-13 finish: 13-15, reached the MAC finals

Prete comes to St. James after 12 years on the Montrose Christian staff. This team is largely an unknown, but has an awful lot of firepower in its top five: George Mason commit Therence Mayimba (6-7, Sr., F), Temple-bound Obi Enechionyia (6-9, Sr., F), Justin Robinson (6-1, Jr., G), A.J. Carr (6-6, Sr., F) and Craig Le Cense (6-6, So., G). “My expectations are to do well in the MAC conference and get some of these kids better and get ready for conference play,” Prete said. “We’re going to try and mix in new pieces with old pieces and get some chemistry going.”

Victor Oladipo and Michael Carter-Williams made NBA history last Tuesday night in a thrilling double-overtime game between the Philadelphia 76ers and Orlando Magic.

The second and 11th draft selections, respectively, became the first pair of rookies to notch triple-doubles in the same game.

Carter-Williams finished with a ridiculous line of 27 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists. Oladipo did more than just keep pace with an astonishing 26 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists.

Freeman is a native of Washington D.C. and attended Oak Hill Academy in Virginia during his high school years. During his junior year, the Warriors went undefeated and finished the season with a No. 1 overall national ranking.

Freeman was the No. 3-ranked recruit coming out of Washington D.C. in the 2013 class. Many schools from the New England area, such as No. 14 Villanova University and Xavier University, gave offers to Freeman. In the end, Freeman’s decision was influenced by something other than closeness
to home.

The road to the starting position was not a simple one for Freeman, as two of State’s other five freshman recruits, forwards Kyle Washington and BeeJay Anya, play the same position as Freeman and have vied for the starting job. However, Washington said the battle for the starting job did not prevent the State newcomers from bonding.

“We’re like brothers,” Washington said. “We go out everywhere and hang out together during the week. Everybody likes everybody on
our team.”

The three freshmen had all played together before in AAU, and Freeman had been especially close to Anya. Anya said Freeman’s decision to sign with State influenced him to join the Pack as well.

“With BeeJay Anya coming in with me, I got someone to relate to,” Freeman said. “I’ve been playing with him since the 10th grade, so I felt like [joining the Pack] was like family.”
Freeman didn’t start the first three regular season games but made a big impact coming off the bench.

In the season-opener against Appalachian State, Freeman made all three of his shot attempts and hauled in six rebounds in 19 minutes on the floor.

Following a strong performance against Campbell in which he scored eight points and grabbed seven rebounds, Freeman was named as the starter for the following three games. He has averaged 2.3 points and 4.6 rebounds per game since then.

Durant recorded his first triple-double of the season with 32 points, 10 rebounds and 12 assists, and the Thunder rallied for another fourth-quarter win, beating the Minnesota Timberwolves 113-103.

Durant also added four blocked shots and four steals. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, he is the first NBA player to record 30 or more points, 10 or more rebounds, 12 or more assists, four or more steals and four or more blocks in the same game since blocks and steals became official NBA stats during the 1973-74 season.

Durant had two of the Thunder's six 3-pointers in the quarter and finished off his fourth career triple-double. His previous three came last season.

Asked if a triple-double meant anything to him, Durant didn't even mention his stat line during his answer, focusing instead on his teammates' defensive effort.

"I'm glad we got the W," Durant said. "We came out a little sluggish on the defensive end early on, but they started off 80% (from the field). Holding them to 41% from the game was really big.

I think our bigs did a good job of frustrating the two bigs on the other end. We kind of fed off their energy."
