When Troy Williams entered Phoebus (Hampton, Va.) three years ago, he had some big shoes to fill. His uncle Boo Williams was an all-state selection at Phoebus in 1977 and subsequently had his No. 5 jersey retired. Troy asked his uncle, now a towering figure on the AAU circuit as the founder of the Boo Williams Summer League, if he could bring down the jersey from the rafters.

"There was a hint of excitement in him," Troy said about his decision to wear No. 5. "Most of what he said was, 'You don't have to play for me, play for yourself.'"

The jersey is now going back into retirement a year earlier than originally expected because the 6-foot-7 forward is transferring to Oak Hill Academy (Mouth of Wilson, Va.) for his senior year. Unlike his decision to wear No. 5 at Phoebus, Troy's family was a bit split on whether he should join the defending POWERADE FAB 50 national champ or stay in Hampton.

"Half of them encouraged me to stay and the other half said it was my choice," said Troy, who has helped BWSL to a 12-7 record and five consecutive wins with one game remaining on Monday morning.

"When I talked to (Oak Hill) coach (Steve) Smith, he said he'll help me with my shot and strength. I think I'll bring high energy and be a big help to the team."

Getting to know… UNC point guard Kendall Marshall

Getting to know...
UNC
point guard
 Kendall Marshall
before the NBA draft
ALL-MET ELITE
BISHOP O'CONNELL HS
ARLINGTON VA.
The final goal is a spot on an NBA roster. To get there, though, college basketball’s best spend the months between the end of the NCAA season and the NBA Draft working on everything a organization will analyze from on-court skill to physical conditioning to how they interview. The IMG Basketball Academy has successfully prepared prospects for the NBA Draft combine, private workouts and NBA career for years, including names like Kobe Bryant, Chauncey Billups, Tayshaun Prince, Jrue Holiday, Iman Shumpert and many others.

He was putting together one of the best statistical seasons ever by a point guard and leading his Tar Heels team to a possible national championship, then Kendall Marshall crashed hard to the ground after a foul in a 2nd-round March Madness game against Creighton. Now nearly recovered and prepping for the NBA Draft at IMG Academies, Marshall talked about his innate point guard nature, meeting President Obama and how a retired Rasheed Wallace can still get buckets.

Kendall Marshall on…

…instincts as a point guard: I’ve always preferred passing over scoring. My dad used to get frustrated with me not scoring. He’d make little bets with me like if I took 10 shots, he would give me money. I had teammates who wouldn’t be able to catch, so my coach told me, “Throw it at their face, and I bet you they catch it.”
Do I get sick of talking about passing? No. It’s what I do. You wouldn’t go to a car salesman and ask them about lottery tickets.

…playing Duke: It was one of the best experiences of my life. You can just feel the difference on campus. You get off the bus and they’re chanting already. I’d be lying if I said I treated every game the same. That game is different. And it’s not even the players, I’ve played with most of them growing up. It’s something about that jersey, you just want to perform when you play them.

…what would have happened if he didn’t get hurt: It’s hard to say “What if?” because there are so many variables in basketball. It was tough to deal with. I didn’t want to end my career on the bench in a suit and tie. I almost felt helpless. I couldn’t support my team. But you have to deal with the circumstances life throws at you.

…the status of his wrist: My wrist is almost 100 percent. What people didn’t know is that I also fractured my elbow. That’s been the toughest thing for me to deal with, still not being able to go full contact. Hopefully, I’ll be ready to go by the Combine.

...when he knew he could be a pro: The end of my freshman year of college. I felt like I was pretty good, but people started asking me after my freshman year if I was coming back. I was like, “Where would I go?” It didn’t even occur to me.

…meeting President Obama during the season: Before the game when we met him, I remember him saying something like “Good job last year once you started playing.” I’m like, “Wow, he knows who I am!?”

…best advice he’s received: I’ll never forget my father once telling me “Big-time players step up and make big-time plays in big-time games.” He used to say it all the time.

…Twitter haters: In season, I get anywhere from 15-25 Tweets per day of just pure recklessness. Keeping it PG, it’s stuff like “You suck” and “You can’t shoot.” Now, it’s “You’re overrated” and “You’re not going to get drafted high.” Even some Carolina fans come at me sideways now because I left school early. Maybe one every couple days I’ll give them a sarcastic response. You have to be able to laugh because these people don’t understand that you’re human and not on a pedestal.

…NBA players returning to UNC for summer games: Their skill set is amazing. Every guy can shoot. They have man strength. There were guys like Brendan Haywood – he can play. Rasheed Wallace comes out and nobody can guard him – and he’s retired! Ray Felton, Sean May, all these guys. It’s a humbling experience. It shows you how much work is left to be done.

…choosing IMG Academies: I feel like what I needed wasn’t on the court, it was off the court. IMG does a tremendous job of taking care of your body. With the NBA workouts, you’re not going to surprise anyone. They’ve been watching you play for years. I’m not preparing for the Draft, I’m preparing for the season. My ability to change directions faster, being more athletic, eating healthy… It was definitely the right choice for me to come here.

BeeJay Anya - Center of Attention - ALL-MET ELITE

BeeJay Anya
Center of Attention
ALL-MET ELITE

Anya, playing in his third season with Team Takeover, has done his part in the squad's 9-5 record in EYBL play. As Team Takeover prepares for this weekend's Oakland, Calif., EYBL session, it is in the driver's seat for qualifying for the Peach Jam.

"I want to win at all costs. I hate losing, and I love winning," said Anya, who is averaging 8.3 points in EYBL play on a balanced Team Takeover squad. "I'm going to do whatever I can to help my team win, whether that's getting rebounds, block shots, score, whatever possible."
Ranked No. 15 overall and the top-ranked center in the ESPN 60, Anya averaged 7.8 points and 2.2 blocks during the Dallas session. He showed his dominance with a 14-point, 5-rebound and 3-block performance in limited play against the Tennessee Travelers. This is Anya's second EYBL season, and before he focuses on choosing a college, he wants to end his AAU career with a Peach Jam title.

At DeMatha Catholic, Anya was a key contributor for a team that finished 30-5 in his junior season. DeMatha capped its season by winning the Alhambra Catholic Invitational for the 21st time. All of the Stags' losses were against Fab 50 teams.
There are multiple highlight tapes available that show his ability to dominate inside. Defensively, he uses his 7-foot-4 wingspan to block shots and grab rebounds. Offensively, Anya's power is beneficial in finishing plays close to the rim.
Anya is balancing a host of offers, including Ohio State, Indiana, Kansas, Syracuse, UCLA and Georgetown, among others. He also has interest from North Carolina, Duke and Kentucky.

The Oklahoma City Thunder defeated the Lakers in five games. Kevin Durant is in the Western Conference finals, Kobe Bryant is watching them on TV. Has Durant surpassed Bryant as the better player? If you were starting a team today, who would you pick?
Breaking down the playoff series, Durant averaged 26.8 points, 8.6 rebounds and 3.2 assists per game, while Bryant averaged 31.2 points, 5.2 rebounds and 3.4 assists. Kobe shot 43% from the field, Durant 52%. Durant held Bryant to two-for-10 from the field in the fourth quarter of Game 4 while the Thunder rallied to win. Bryant scored 42 points in the Game 5 loss.
So who would you take? Durant or Bryant?

Red Bull King of the Rock Aired Saturday on CBS

Red Bull King of the Rock Aired this past  Saturday on CBS
WINNER

HUGH "BABY SHAQ"JONES
SPINGARN HS.
WASHINGTON D.C.
ALL-MET ELITE

RAJON RONDO & BABY SHAQ
The 6-3, 240-pound, Baby Shaq (Washington, DC) won the final with ease, outmuscling New Orleans native Lance Perique, 18-9. Featuring 64 competitors from 13 countries, all who qualified in regional tournaments around the globe, King of the Rock pitted the players in a tournament-style series of one-on-ones battles. While the level of talent was high for this type of tournament (the winner, Hugh “Baby Shaq” Jones, looked unstoppable), and while the prize for winning ($10,000) was high for this type of tournament, that’s not what separated King of the Rock from all the other tourneys.

For the first time ever, amidst the crumbling walls and the eerily-lit cell house, a national television audience will see basketball played on “The Rock” of Alcatraz Island, one of the most notorious locations on earth. Airing Saturday, May 19 at 2 p.m. ET/11 a.m. PT on CBS, 64 players from around the world make their way to Red Bull King of the Rock.

The Playground Gave Us Stevie Franchise - ALL-MET ELITE

The Playground Gave Us Stevie Franchise
STEVE FRANCIS
ALL-MET ELITE

Stop!
For those who only deal in short term memory, the name Steve Francis may only conjure up a shrug of the shoulders. During the last few years, his playing career has wound down rather unceremoniously. But the ending of a book is never the best place to judge it’s worth. The entire story must be digested in order to form a proper opinion. And although the last chapters in Francis’ career have been anti-climactic, there’s no denying that the beginning and middle stanzas of the man’s journey has earned him a place in “The Playground Gave Us…” pantheon.
Steve D’Shawn Francis, a.k.a. “Stevie Franchise” a.k.a. “Steve-O”, grew up in Tacoma Park, Maryland, a stone’s throw from the D.C. city line. His early days were challenging, growing up poor with his mother and grandmom. His dad walked out when he was 6 years old. By the age of 10, he was helping to pay the household bills by picking up odd jobs around the neighborhood.
He also picked up a ball around the time his pops left, showing an uncanny ability to entertain spectators. His family and folks around the way called him “Wink.”
He hit the Maryland and D.C. playgrounds, in addition to neighborhood rec centers. But he only played one game of high school ball. He’d been in and out of a number of schools and displayed an allergy for schoolwork. When his mother died, Stevie was 16. He then proceeded to drop out of school for good. After his mother succumbed to cancer, Francis did not touch a basketball for two years. He got a tattoo on his right arm that reads “In Memory of Brenda.” Throughout his playing days, whether in a packed arena in front of 20,000 or out in the park, he rubbed the tattoo each time he prepared to take a free throw.
In August of ‘96, he was just another 18-year-old asphalt phenom with no high school diploma, wandering aimlessly through life. Earlier that summer, Lou Wilson, the coach at Langley High School, managed to get Stevie a spot on Team Maryland as they were heading to the AAU National Championships in Florida. He played well in the tourney and impressed some coaches, but no offers came, which wasn’t surprising considering that he hadn’t seen a classroom in years.
Then, one of his best friends named Mike Palmer was gunned down. He thought about his mother and the hopes she harbored for him.
“After awhile, I started thinking about what she’d want for me,” Francis said in the NY Daily News. “She’d want me to get an education. She’d want me to be happy again. She was such a strong woman, such a fighter. I couldn’t disappoint her.”
Francis reached out to a mentor named Nate Peake who was coaching at the Langley Park Boys and Girls club. Peake knew his way around the sports landscape because he also moonlighted as an assistant manager for his cousin, prizefighter Sharmba Mitchell. Peake told Stevie to get down to the gym.
Francis showed up and destroyed a playground rival during the run. Although he wasn’t even 6-feet tall, he jumped out of the gym for some remarkable dunks, drove the hole with ease and authority and drained long range jumpers from all over the court. During the day, Peake and Francis worked out and got his game tight. Afternoons and evenings were reserved for putting in the academic work and studying to get a G.E.D.
Peake used his connections to secure an offer from San Jacinto Junior College in Texas. “If you do A, B, and C,” Peake told the young man, “D will follow.” The D he referred to was pro ball.
In the fall of ‘96, Francis packed his bags for Pasadena, Texas. He played point guard, led the team into the JUCO post season tourney with an undefeated mark and within one win of a National JUCO championship.
The next year he transferred to Allegany College, a Maryland JUCO, and averaged 23 points, 9 assists and & 7 rebounds per game during another undefeated regular season. He’d also grown to be 6′3″. Stevie Franchise became the first player ever to take two unbeaten teams into the National Junior College Tournament.
Pro scouts started showing up in Cumberland, Maryland to see what all the whispers were about. Stevie thought about going pro, but figured he could improve his profile and draft position with an NCAA takeover.
When he showed up in College Park the next fall, word spread so quickly about how he was killing it in practice that he received a standing ovation during his first introduction, just for removing his warm-up pants.
At the University of Maryland in ‘98-’99, he crashed the national radar when, along with Terrence Morris, Laron Profit, Obenna Ekezie and youngsters Juan Dixon and Lonny Baxter, the Terps rang up 28 wins and were ranked as high as #2 in the country. He averaged 17 points, 5 assists and 3 steals per game en route to being named All-American and a Naismith and Wooden Award finalist. He also shocked and amazed with his playground style, crossover dribble, powerful and gravity defying Jordan-like lean in slams and propensity to take over whenever he needed.
Fans at Cole Field House begged him to score more and be more selfish. “But that’s not the way I play,” he told Lisa Olsen of the NY Daily News.
While most people only saw the highlight reel dunks every night on SportsCenter, those who watched him every day at practice knew he was something special.
“If you watch ESPN, you think he just dunks at the end of transition,” Terps coach Gary Williams told the NY Times. “He’s not averaging many more shots than everybody else. What I like is his willingness to blend in with other players.”
Williams also said this to Lisa Olsen of the NY Daily News: “Steve is incredibly unselfish. I find myself shaking my head at him sometimes, not for what he does, but for how complete a player and person he is.”
“Everyone noticed the dunks and the 3-pointers, but as a coach what I really appreciated was his defense,” Williams was once quoted in Sports Illustrated. “He also was a great passer, an unselfish player who made those around him better.”
The Terps were eventually upset by coach Mike Jarvis’ St. John’s Red Storm – which was led by Ron Artest, Bootsy Thornton, Eric Barkley and Lavor Postell – during March Madness that year in the Sweet 16.
Before the tourney match-up, while Postell was saying that Francis was just an average player who could do spectacular dunks, Ron-Ron begged to differ.
“I’ve seen him crossing people over and he’s very active on the boards,” Artest told Judy Battista of the New York Times. “I don’t think you can take him out of his game.”
After his one and done, Stevie took some heat for refusing to play for the team that drafted him, the Vancouver Grizzlies. But once that storm passed, the man called “Stevie Franchise” went about the business of bringing his D.C. playground boogie to the world’s greatest stage – the NBA.
On occassion he’d come back home to run at the Goodman League or the Jabbo Kenner during the summertime. One legendary match-up took place in 2001 at the Kenner, in Georgetown’s McDonough Arena. On that night which will forever be talked about in D.C. lore, the team called Francis’ Hitmen – with Cuttino Mobley, Moochie Norris, Walt “The Wizard” Williams and Jerome “Junk Yard Dog” Williams – lost to a team of street royalty 121-120. Stevie dropped 59 on D.C. legend Curt “Trouble” Smith. The problem was that the 6-foot “Trouble” gave Stevie 62!
Although playoff success eluded him, he thrilled millions around the globe during his years with the Rockets and the Magic. And despite the injuries that grounded him with the Knicks, Francis can limp off into the sunset with his head held high. Sometimes, the brightest shooting stars fade quick, and never reach the heights that others think they should. But Steve Francis owes no one an apology. For a kid who dropped out of school and played one game of JV ball in high school as the third string point guard, I’d say he came pretty darn far. And if it wasn’t for the neighborhood oasis’ of the blacktop, the rec centers and the tiny plywood court in a firehouse basement gym that allowed him to keep the flicker of his basketball dream alive, who knows if the world would have ever heard from him.

STANFORD ROBINSON COMMITS TO INDIANA UNIVERSITY - ALL-MET ELITE

STANFORD ROBINSON
COMMITS
TO
INDIANA UNIVERSITY
 ALL-MET ELITE
Tom Crean started the ascent back to the top one year early at Indiana and his 2012 class is one of the highest-rated in the nation, but on Wednesday night the Hoosiers added an important piece to their Class of 2013: Paul VI (Va.) guard Stanford Robinson.
“What Everyone has been waiting for Today I made my decision I Have committed to Indiana!!!,” Robinson tweeted around 9:30 p.m. Wednesday. #Iubb #HoosierNation were Family!!”
At 6-4, 185 pounds, Robinson has the size to be a college shooting guard and brings the scoring ability that the Hoosiers could use in the backcourt. He averaged 14 points, six rebounds, and four assists per game this past season.
Robinson reportedly took an unofficial visit to Indiana on Monday. His high school coach, Glen Farello, took time to comment on the commitment.
“He felt very strong about the opportunity he had to play for coach (Tom) Crean,” Farello told the Herald-Times. “There was a lot of comfort level there with him and his staff and everything about Indiana basketball. There’s a lot to like obviously, and Stan just felt very comfortable.”
The key to Robinson’s commitment seems to be Indiana’s hiring of Towson assistant Kenny Johnson, a move that took place last month.
Johnson, a former assistant at Paul VI, coached at the Fairfax Catholic school from 2007-2011.
Johnson also coached with Team Takeover D.C., a prominent AAU program in the Washington D.C. area, a team for which Robinson plays.
“Between Kenny and Stan, there’s a bond there,” Farello continued. “The important thing that I stressed to Stan and his family is that, it’s nice that Kenny’s there, but you’ve gotta feel comfortable with Coach Crean and the players and the environment and the distance and all of those factors. It’s an added benefit to have that relationship there. … But he was so thorougly impressed by Coach Crean and the entire set up that is IU basketball.”
And the Hoosiers won’t be done in 2013.
Much of the focus now shifts to DeMatha (D.C.) forward BeeJay Anya, who is friendly with Robinson and also plays for Team Takeover. The 6-8, 265-pound Maryland native is a high priority for the Hoosiers in 2013.
