GONZAGA HS.
CLASS of 20/20

After relocating in December of 2015, the only high schools I initially considered were Gonzaga and Dematha, and continued to be my only choices throughout the process. Before moving here I knew about the tradition of Gonzaga, the brotherhood within the school and the environment the school provides, it really feels like a family and I can't wait to attend Gonzaga next year. After I got to DC I learned what it's really like to play in a league like the WCAC. It's second to none the amount of competition and exposure that the league provides. I also learned more about the coaching staff and their plan for me throughout these next 4 years. What made me decide that Gonzaga is the place for me academically is the relationships that the students share with the teachers and the way that the classrooms and always feel. Not only that, but the classes are rigorous and prepare you better for success after basketball. To prepare for high school Ball, I'm getting smarter, more explosive, stronger, and more efficient in my game this off season.

The high school game is a lot tougher than middle school so I'm also playing a lot of 15u with Team Takeover. I'm also getting in the gym a lot with my Gonzaga teammates so we can build that chemistry that is needed for a championship team. There are a couple of my teammates that are thinking about attending Gonzaga with me so I'll be trying to convince them to come along as well, but out of respect for them I'm not going to list their name(s). I feel as a player, I'm going to bring a very strong work ethic, leadership, a lot of points, and a spark to Gonzaga. As I figure out my role with the team, I'll be more and more comfortable with what I do and be able to do it in an Abundance. I have a lot of ways to score and Coach Turner will get me in the spots I need to be in. I'm also bringing a championship mentality. I don't want to be known as a winner when I leave Gonzaga, I want to be known as a champion. Every game to me is win or go home and I thank the lord every time I step on to the floor to give it my all.

MYLES STUTE - THE FUTURE HAS ARRIVED - ALL-MET ELITE

MYLES STUTE
CLASS of 2020
 THE FUTURE HAS ARRIVED
 ALL-MET ELITE

SCHOOL WITHOUT WALLS @ FRANCIS STEVENS
WASHINGTON D.C.
Minneapolis native 6'6 Myles Stute ('20) brought perimeter mastery, turnaround jumper to HoopElite DMV today #Next http://t.co/81KK0vEV6w

My names is Myles Stute I started playing basketball at the age of 3 and have been in love ever since.

I'm 13 years old, 6'5", I attend School Without Walls @ Francis Stevens, I am currently in the 8th grade. I prefer to play the small forward, but I am able to play shooting guard through power forward.

The most influential adult in basketball to me is my father. He instilled a big part of my work ethic and from his job career showed me just what hard work does. My mother and father are the most influential adults in my life and I can't thank them enough for shaping me into the young man I have become today.

I'm originally from Minneapolis, Minnesota and played for Benilde-St.Margret's high school varsity basketball before moving this year. For AAU I played with MPLS FAB and we placed 9th at AAU nationals in Greensboro, NC this past summer.

I moved to Washington, D.C. on December 24th because my father received a job opportunity here  and we decided to relocate as a family. We also have a couple of family members in the DMV.

As of right now I play for Team Takeover Orange and my coach is Kelvin Johnson, he's a phenomenal coach and has elevated my game through the past couple of months. From the month of April on I will play for Team Takeover Black which is coached by Keith Stevens.

My biggest basketball moment or accomplishment so far would have to be getting my first D1 interest from a college - George Washington University. It humbled me and showed me that my name is out there, but now it's time for me to lock down and really work my tail off

While working out by myself in the gym I get a lot of dribbling in as I think that will take my game to another level. I also do a lot of off the dribble moves while in the gym by myself, and a lot of free throws because lately my free throws aren't where I'd like them to be. Lastly, I am working on getting more explosive with my dunks and perfecting new ones. Those are just a couple things I've been working on by myself but I do a lot more work with my team and my trainers.

For high school, the only schools I'm considering are Gonzaga and DeMatha.

My favorite player in high school has got to be none other than Jayson Tatum. I really tried to emulate some of my game after him and I've added some of his moves to my game. He's an exceptional player. In college, Ben Simmons is my go to guy even though I've been a Duke fan since I was 5. At the NBA level, my favorite player is a draw between Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson. Stephen curry has been my favorite player ever since he put up big numbers against a talented Duke team back in '09. I've always loved Klay because of the way he led his Washington State team and how was named to the Pac-10 All Freshman team.

If I could play 1on1 against any player on any level, it would be Jabari Parker in Milwaukee. He's a matchup nightmare and I want to see how tough it is to guard him personally.

The style of basketball from where I'm from is much different than it is down in the DMV. In Minnesota, there's only a few guys that can really play, to name a few would be Gary Trent Jr. and Amir Coffee. In my grade, my team and I really dominated Minnesota and we had a lot of 8th graders playing varsity level basketball this year but other than that, the talent there isn't so great. In the DMV, every night there's competition to play against that will challenge you and make you a better player. Not only are you playing against great players but so many great players are on your team as well and I've made the most out of what I can. It was really a blessing in disguise for me to move across the country in the middle of my 8th grade year, and it's been amazing so far.

The most points I've scored in a game was 56 back in Minnesota in a fall league game against some of the top freshman in Minnesota. You can find a couple clips from the game on my Instagram
@myle22tute. The toughest player for me to play against in the 8th grade would have to be my teammate Terrance Williams. Going against him during practice really raised my defensive and offensive IQ a lot in the past couple of months and he's a great player. Going head to head in a game with AJ Hoggard and Team Final Blue taught me a lot as a player, and it turned out to be a great game even though we lost. That loss hurt us as a team and we learned a lot of lessons from that game.

My future goals are to first go undefeated with Team Takeover Black on our summer circuit. We put in so much work and I believe we have a very strong chance to win a lot of games if not all of them. Another goal I have for this upcoming summer is to add at least 9 inches to my vertical. Some more goals I have is to attract more interest from colleges and gain some scholarships over the next 4-5 months.

Chris Lykes (5-7/PG) Gonzaga
Lykes has been outstanding from the start. Early in conference play it appeared that Lykes may even run away with the award with outstanding performances against both St. John’s and DeMatha including a thriller at DeMatha where Lykes’ 30 helped hand DeMatha their 1st conference loss and their 1st home loss of the season. After a 38-point explosion over the weekend against O’Connell it’s going to be really hard to not give him the award.

Anthony Cowan Jr. (5-11/PG) St. John’s
Upon heaping early season praises upon Chris Lykes and Markelle Fultz, quietly (if you can call 21 ppg quiet) Anthony has put St. John’s atop the WCAC along with DeMatha and would be in sole possession of 1st place if not for a late season loss to Bishop O’Connell in which Cowan Jr. had a more than admirable 27 points. After not being selected for the McDonald’s All-American game Cowan went out and put 39 on McDonald’s All-American Kobi Simmons. With Lykes looking like the favorite to win the award this year, lets just hope they give the trophy out after the tournament…for everyone else’s sake, just ask Kobi Simmons.

Markelle Fultz (6-4/PG) DeMatha
Fultz has been by far DeMatha’s most consistent player carrying them to the top of the WCAC and coming up big down the stretch in some impressive victories including an overtime win over Chaminade on ESPN earlier in the season. DeMatha is a favorite again to win the WCAC title which means Fultz has more than an outside chance of repeating as Player of the Year.

VJ King (6-8/F) Paul VI
At nearly 23 ppg and a McDonald’s All-American Game and a Jordan Brand Classic selection King has more than made his case to be in the conversation, but with the Panthers currently standing at 10-7 in the WCAC it will be hard to outshine some of the candidates from better performing teams.

Nate Watson (6-8/F) Bishop O’Connell
Nate is one of 2 dark horses for the award this season. No player in the WCAC and few in the DMV have had as much of an impact in the paint as Watson and if the Knights’ guard play can really click O’Connell could find themselves taking home the hardware.

Jamir Moultrie (6-0/PG) Bishop McNamara
It’s hard to call a guy posting almost 18 ppg for a very solid McNamara squad a darkhorse. In many seasons and in many other leagues Moultrie would be an easy favorite for player of the year, but like King for PVI he may be a victim of a less than stellar record in the WCAC.

Individual play throughout the WCAC has been phenomenal this season but a few very talented young men have played at a level above most and therefore certainly deserve consideration as the top player in one of the nations top high school conferences.

"I mean, it's just an honor," Iverson initially downplayed in an interview with The Vertical last week, before pausing to really take in the magnitude of the moment. "I'd be lying to you, and I might not've said it publicly [along the way], but it's something that you think about as you get better and better. As you start accomplishing so many different things, in your mind, you're thinking, 'Damn, I can be a Rookie of the Year if I work hard.' Or, 'I can make the Olympic team.' Or, 'I can make the All-Star team.' Then, after you accomplish all of those things, after awhile, you know how good you are because of just your production. … I used to say, 'Wouldn't it be crazy, I could be a Hall of Famer?"

"God gave me all this, why waste the talent that he gave me?" he said "Why not go full throttle with it all and try to become in the class with the greatest players that ever played the game? That's just a great feeling. Then, you think about all of the guys, teammates and coaches, fans and family members and friends – everybody that helped you get there – because it's a tribute to them too. Once it happens, if it happens, they're going to get all of the credit, because without all of those people that I mentioned, it wouldn't be possible."

First of all: How has Villanova's basketball team never been ranked No. 1 before this week? Kerry Kittles' socks were never given one measly, deferential week atop the Associated Press poll? Our fifth-grade AAU team wore knee-high socks for a whole summer in 1995! We understood the meaning of respect. What a travesty.

With that bone properly picked, we can think of no better time to introduce Hart to the Wooden Watch's top five.

Hart has been hovering in the honorable mentions for weeks. He's never among the first few names mentioned in any player of the year discussion. In the Big East, Providence's Kris Dunn understandably maintains most of the mindshare. Even in the context of Villanova, Ryan Arcidiacono, reigning Big East Player of the Year, is the first dude discussed. Which is understandable. No elite team of 2015-16 is as much of a starless ensemble as Jay Wright's. It vastly exceeds the sum of its parts and takes that compliment in stride.

Yet Hart is the best and most important of those parts. He is Villanova's leading scorer (15.4 points per game), its second-leading rebounder (7.4) and its co-leader in steals (1.3). He takes 25.6 percent of Nova's shots -- the next closest Wildcat, Kris Jenkins, doesn't break 24 percent -- and makes 63 percent of his 2-point field goal attempts. His rebounding covers for Jenkins, an ostensible 4-man who leads the team in 3s and very much prefers not to play around the rim. Hart's interior accuracy makes Villanova's offense reliable even when the Wildcats aren't making 3s. His strengths mask other's weaknesses.

VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS
 ALL-MET ELITE

Last night gave us the FAB50 East Coast Matchup of the Week as St. Johns traveled across NW to face off against Gonzaga. This game was a back and forth battle as every WCAC game has been this season. Ultimately it was seniors Anthony Cowan and Khalia Sykes that help lead the way for the Cadets as they took down Gonzaga.
