ALLEN IVERSON & STEVE FRANCIS LOOKING TO TEAM UP IN 2014 - ALL-MET ELITE

ALLEN IVERSON
 &
 STEVE FRANCIS
LOOKING TO TEAM UP IN
2014
 ALL-MET ELITE

Former NBA star Allen Iverson, known as the Answer, is coming to town with a band of high-flying streetballers and ex-pros for clinics, campus/mall tours and a “real” game to be played at the Mall of Asia Arena on Nov. 5 for the benefit of Gawad Kalinga.

Iverson, 39, will coach the pick-up squad and not play. But a source said if he gets the urge to lace up, there won’t be stopping the Answer who averaged 26.7 points in 914 NBA regular season games from 1996-97 to 2009-10. The six-foot guard from Georgetown University was the NBA’s MVP in 2001 and led the league in scoring in four seasons. He was also voted MVP in two All-Star Games. On the court, Iverson was often unstoppable with an unreal ability to find ways to score from different angles and spots.

Aside from the six streetballers, Iverson will bring in former NBA players. There is no confirmation as to who will be added to Iverson’s squad but high on the invited list are 7-0 center Eddy Curry and 6-3 Steve Francis. Curry, 31, was the Chicago Bulls’ first round pick in 2001 and has played in 11 NBA seasons with the Bulls, New York, Miami and Dallas. Francis, 37, was the Vancouver Grizzlies’ first round pick in 1999 and played in nine NBA seasons with Houston, Orlando and New York.

DC PREMIER WINS LAS VEGAS 48 CHAMPIONSHIP - ALL-MET ELITE

DC PREMIER
 WINS
 LAS VEGAS 48 CHAMPIONSHIP
 ALL-MET ELITE

Different name, same result.
Reserve guard Jamaal King had a team-high nine points, and DC Premier held on to beat Louisiana Dynasty 50-46 on Sunday in the championship bracket final of the Las Vegas Fab 48 invitational division at Bishop Gorman.

It is the second straight year a team from Washington D.C. won the top bracket in the tournament’s 17-and-under division.

DC Assault took last year’s title and was rebranded DC Premier AAU.

“I believe the kids are mentally tough. They didn’t let anything bother them,” DC Premier coach Corey McCrae said. “They did great in school this past year and they just kept working. It’s not about the organization, it’s about the kids in the organization.”

King hit a 3-pointer with 6:25 remaining in the second half to cap a 10-0 run that gave DC Premier its largest lead of the game at 40-32. Jon Davis hit two free throws with 10 seconds left after Louisiana Dynasty cut DC Premier’s lead to 48-46.

Leroy Butts, a Rhode Island commit, had eight points and nine rebounds, and Charlie Thomas added eight points and five board as DC Premier had nine players score. Davis and Marquez Letcher each had seven points, and teammate Develle Phillips, a 6-9 forward, pulled down nine rebounds.

The majority of DC Premier’s players were part of the DC Assault team that lost in the title game of the 16-and-under division at last year’s Fab 48.

“We told ourselves we’re going to leave with a bang for our last AAU season,” King said. “New team, new coach. We just said we’ve got to leave it all on the court.”

Louisiana Dynasty’s Jacob Evans, a 6-5 shooting guard ranked No. 144 in the nation by Rivals.com, had a game-high 15 points along with four rebounds. Evans’ driving layup cut DC Premier’s lead to 44-40 with 2:30 to play, and he made three free throws with 11 seconds left to bring Louisiana Dynasty within 48-46 before Davis’ game-clinching free throws.
Jahshire Hardnett added 12 points and four rebounds for Louisiana Dynasty, and teammate Jordan Andrews scored 10.

DC Premier held Louisiana Dynasty scoreless for the opening 5 minutes, 28 seconds and led 21-19 at halftime.

“It’s special. I believe we have the most talent in the country, and I just believe our guys fight very, very hard,” McCrae said. “It’s hard to win this tournament. We won nine games in a row; that was tough, man. We’ve got gritty, tough kids, and they just love to play basketball.”

Several times last year, Mike Krzyzewski, unprompted mentioned that Tyler Thorntonwould make a good basketball coach. It was a compliment of Thornton’s basketball IQ, his understanding of the game.

Now, less than three months after graduating and ending his Duke career, Thornton is a coach. And he’s working for a familiar face.

Marquette head coach Steve Wojciechowski—who spent the past 15 years on the Duke bench as an assistant—announced Friday that Thornton was joining his staff in Milwaukee. Thornton is expected to work as a graduate assistant.

RIVERDALE BAPTIST HS.
UPPER MARLBORO MD.

Siena head coach Jimmy Patsos on Friday received a verbal commitment from 6-foot-3 point guard Kenny Wormley, who is entering his senior year at Riverdale Baptist in Upper Marlboro, Md.

Wormley, a lefthanded shooter, took an unofficial visit to Siena a couple of weeks ago.
“When I visited, I just liked the school and I liked the coaches,” Wormley said. “The coaches just told me I was their guy, so I trusted the coaches and I trust that this would be the best fit for me and I trust the coaches to make me a better player and the best player I can be.”

Wormley plays for the same AAU program, Team Takover, that produced Wright. They didn’t play together because Wright was in an older division.
Wright, from Waldorf, Md., made a strong impression as a Siena freshman last season. He finished second in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference with 5.2 assists per game and made the MAAC All-Rookie team.

“When I visited, Marquis was like he loved playing for Coach Patsos and Coach Patsos brings the best out of a player,” Wormley said. “So I really liked that about the team and the coach.”
Wormley described himself as “kind of pass first, but I can score, too. I can get my teammates involved and make good decisions.”

The blueprint is for Wright to start at the point for the next three seasons with Wormely arriving as his understudy in the fall of 2015. Then Wormley could take over for the 2017-18 season, when he would be a Siena junior.

“Since Marquis is there, they said Marquis is going to be the starting point guard for the next three years,” Wormley said. “So Coach Patsos said he wants me to play the combo (guard) and when Marquis graduates, I’ll move over to the point guard position … They said if I worked hard enough and I can show them what I can do, I can probably play right away.”

The Washington Wizards would boast a formidable lineup that includes Carmelo Anthony (Baltimore), Kevin Durant, Rudy Gay, and Ty Lawson (and Roy Hibbert).

We could also have Victor Oladipo on the team.
