DC PREMIER SET TO BECOME FLAGSHIP UNDER ARMOUR AAU PROGRAM - ALL-MET ELITE

DC PREMIER
SET TO BECOME
FLAGSHIP
UNDER ARMOUR
AAU PROGRAM
 ALL-MET ELITE

The D.C. Assault AAU program, headed by co-founder Curtis Malone, had been a fixture on the grassroots basketball scene in the nation’s capital since the early 1990s. D.C. Assault is fading away and a new, separate program is emerging, D.C. Premier, which takes hold as Under Armour’s flagship program in the region, Under Armour announced officially in late February.

Under Armour has laid out its 2014 grassroots schedule, as well, comprised of 30 teams (plus one) in two conferences that will play five events from April through July. D.C. Premier takes its spot in the East, joining other powers on the circuit including Juice All-Stars, New Heights, Atlanta Xpress, and SportsU.

Perhaps most notable for Under Armour, though, is its crown jewel, called “The Finals” which will take place in Atlanta, Ga. during the final live recruiting period in July. It goes head-to-head with Nike’s Peach Jam, which takes place at the same time in North Augusta, S.C., just east of the Georgia state line.

SPINGARN HS. PLAYERS RANKED BEST SYRACUSE UNIVERSITY POINT GUARDS EVER - ALL-MET ELITE

SPINGARN HS. PLAYERS
RANKED BEST
SYRACUSE UNIVERSITY
POINT GUARDS
EVER
ALL-MET ELITE

SHERMAN DOUGLAS
SPINGARN HS.
WASHINGTON D.C.

1. Dave Bing (1963-66)
Admittedly, Bing was more of a combo guard. Yet it’d be a mistake to remember him for just his prodigious scoring ability.

During his First Team All-American senior season in 1965-1966, Bing racked up 6.0 APG in addition to scoring 28.4 PPG (which still stands as the single-season school record). Moreover, Bing also grabbed 10.3 RPG for his career - an astonishing number in light of the fact that he was a 6-foot-3 guard.

Bing isn’t just the best point guard in Syracuse history, he’s also the greatest Orange player ever. Period.

2. Sherman Douglas (1985-1989)
Douglas was a product of the same Washington D.C. high school (Spingarn) that produced Dave Bing. Just like they did with Bing, the Orange struck it rich.

Had he not backed up Pearl Washington as a freshman, Douglas could’ve very well finished his career as the first player ever with over 2,000 points and 1,000 assists in a career (he finished with 2,060 and 960 respectively). His finishing ability and masterful running of the Orangemen fast break was what helped transform the program into a perennial Big East contender.

And all this from a player whose only scholarship offer came from Jim Boeheim.

QUINN COOK and JERAMI GRANT REFLECT ON PLAYING AT DEMATHA - ALL-MET ELITE

DEMATHA HS.

QUINN COOK - DUKE UNIVERSITY

JERAMI GRANT - SYRACUSE UNIVERSITY

Quinn Cook stood waiting by the basket to see if Jerami Grant could back up the talk.It was the beginning of Grant’s sophomore year at DeMatha (Md.) Catholic High School, and he wanted to prove to his good friend, and teammate, that he could dunk. In one quick moment, Cook’s skepticism turned to disbelief.Grant threw it down.“I told him now he better start catching my ‘oops,” Cook said. “I think in that year we got about two or three.”Grant and Cook had been best friends since they played county basketball together when they were just 7 and 8 years old. Their lives were basketball, whether it meant sitting at home together playing basketball video games, or watching Tracy McGrady — Jerami’s favorite player — go up against Kobe Bryant, Cook’s favorite player.

“We’ve been friends since we were in kindergarten,” Grant said. “We always played together.”The two continued to play together at DeMatha, one of the premier high school basketball programs in the country.Their 2009-10 team included the Orlando Magic’s Victor Oladipo, Georgetown’s Mikael Hopkins and Pittsburgh’s James Robinson. With all the talent surrounding him, Grant was the quiet one on the team. He hadn’t quite broken out of his shell.Cook was the outgoing one. He had a different handshake with every single teammate. When they were together off the court, nothing was different. But on the court, Cook tried to fire Grant up.

“Being the athlete that (Jerami) was, you could count on him for a block or dunk” DeMatha head coach Mike Jones said. “Then the first opportunity after those plays, you’d have Quinn running up to him. He’d run up to him and do the handshake with him.”The Stags went 32-4 that season and won the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference Championship. It was an outstanding season, but it still had its bumps in the road. The team started out 16-0.Their 17th game was against Mater Dei in the Hoop Hall Classic in Springfield, Mass. The game was televised on ESPN, and despite all the excitement surrounding it, DeMatha lost. After that game, with players in the locker room crying, Cook was the guy that told everyone not to worry, and that there were better things to come.

“You only remember the losses, you never remember the wins,” said Marcellous Bell, who played for DeMatha that season. “It kind of brought us together and helped us build toward that championship goal.”Cook was right, and DeMatha eventually won the city championship, and it was largely due to the play of Grant and Cook.In the championship game, Grant, who had first shown off his dunking prowess to Cook only at the beginning of the season, threw one down with authority.

Cook, who was in more disbelief than when he saw it for the first time months before, ran over to Grant and gave him a huge hug. Cook said it was the best play of the season. A photo of their moment was plastered on the Washington Post the next day, and it still remains tacked to Jones’ wall.Jones, DeMatha’s head coach, has led a countless number of terrific basketball teams. He doesn’t like to compare them, but was willing to relent when it came to the talent of that 2009–10 team.“You won’t get me to say they were more talented than other teams,” Jones said. “But common sense, well, it is what it is.”

Jones said he plans to do whatever he can to watch his two old players go at it, even though the Stags have a game in California.Watching his old players means a great deal to him, and he also knows that Cook and Grant playing against each other means a lot to their former teammates. They’ll take the court as opponents, but consider each other to be more than that. “That’s my little brother,” Cook said.“To play Jerami in college, it’s just surreal. I watched him grow up.”

MARCUS THORNTON LEADING WILLIAM & MARY - ALL-MET ELITE

MARCUS THORNTON
LEADING
WILLIAM & MARY
 ALL-MET ELITE

BISHOP MCNAMARA HS.
FORESTVILLE MD.

As a junior at Bishop McNamara High in one of the nation's best leagues - the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference - Thornton was lost in the clutter, averaging 17 points a game. Bigger programs took a wait-and-see approach to the slender 6-foot-4 guard.

William & Mary pounced, wooing Thornton hard. He appreciated the attention.

"They made me really feel like they needed me," he said.

Thornton signed before his senior year of high school - and before he blossomed into the Maryland and WCAC Player of the Year.

"That's when heads started turning," he said. "A little too late."

Thornton was at peace with his decision, and it's proved to be a case of a player picking a level where he could thrive.

Thornton averaged 11.1 points as a freshman, and 18.8 last season, when he led the Colonial Athletic Association in 3-pointers made and percentage. He averages 18.8 again through 26 games this year (fourth in the league), and has been a difference-maker in several wins.

He is on track to become the first William & Mary player since Adam Hess in 2004 to be named All-CAA and is a hot streak away from becoming the only Tribe player other than Hess to lead the conference in scoring.

"He's obviously as good a scorer as there is in the league," Towson coach Pat Skerry said. "I think he's a next-level player."

Never bashful about letting fly from behind the arc or slashing to the rim, Thornton has become a more complete player this year, Tribe coach Tony Shaver said.

"His assists are up, he's become more efficient, he really kind of runs the show for us at times," Shaver said.

 ZION HARMON
 TEAM GLORY
 ALL-MET ELITE

Zion Harmon (black jersey) and Jaden Springer (white jersey) went head to head at the 2014 John Lucas All Star Weekend event in New Orleans. Zion and Jaden are considered some of the top basketball players in the class of 2021. Springer's We All Can Go Team defeated Harmon's Team Glory in the 5th Grade division of the John Lucas event. Harmon was consistently double and triple teamed in the game but played very well. It's still extremely early, but it was intriguing to watch two of the top players in the class of 2021 match up against each other. Both players gave maximum effort diving on the floor and playing physical against one another.

BOO WILLIAMS SHARES HIS OPINION ON ATHLETES RECLASSIFYING - ALL-MET ELITE

BOO WILLIAMS
SHARES HIS
 OPINION
ON ATHLETES
 RECLASSIFYING
 ALL-MET ELITE

MATT COLEMAN
MAURY HS.
NORFOLK VA.

Boo Williams, Hampton Roads' nationally known AAU basketball coach, said reclassifying has been going on for decades in larger cities, and he doesn't expect the trend to slow any time soon.

"That one year makes a huge difference," Williams said. "It could make the difference of you going to school for free or paying. And it's the difference of being a top-100 prospect or not being ranked at all. So it's hard to tell a kid to not reclassify."

Matt Coleman, one of South Hampton Roads' rising basketball stars and now a freshman at Maury, repeated eighth grade. Coleman, who turned 15 last month, is an honors student who plays on Boo Williams' elite AAU team.

"I knew I was going to reclassify from the moment he started to walk," said Coleman's father Cliff, a former standout basketball player who is in his 16th season on the coaching staff at Apprentice School. "We made the decision from just watching the culture of basketball. Most of your better players have that extra year, and when they become juniors or seniors, they are your stronger and more dominant players."

Williams said the same can be said about Coleman.

"If he doesn't reclassify in middle school, then he's a really good 10th-grader," he said. "But now that he's reclassified, he's one of the best players in the country."

KENDALL MARSHALL CONTINUES TO PROVE THAT HE IS A STARTING POINT GUARD IN THE NBA - ALL-MET ELITE

KENDALL MARSHALL
CONTINUES TO PROVE
 THAT HE
IS A
STARTING POINT GUARD
 IN THE NBA
 ALL-MET ELITE

BISHOP O'CONNELL HS.
ARLINGTON VA.

In Thursday’s loss to the OKC Thunder, Marshall racked up 17 assists which tied his career-high that he set on Jan. 5 against the Denver Nuggets in his second start for the Lakers. His two 17-plus assists games this season are tied for the league lead and his six 14-plus assist games rank him second in the NBA this year.

The second-year guard has now made 16 starts with Los Angeles, and entering Thursday’s game was averaging 11.9 points and 11.5 assists as a starter. This also included a stretch of five straight double-doubles and 14 games of double-digit assists totals.

What these numbers show is that Marshall has taken full advantage of a dire point guard situation when he first signed with the team in mid-December. What it also shows is that the 22-year-old can be a solid starting point guard when given the opportunity to do so.

“The biggest thing is confidence,” Marshall said. “All my coaches and teammates are instilling confidence (in me) that makes it easy to go out and play, which you got to give them credit for that.”

Marshall's play has not gone unnoticed as Lakers head coach Mike D’Antoni has been quite impressed by his performance as the team’s starting point guard.

“His numbers are definitely nice,” D’Antoni said. “He has definitely responded. He is playing really, really, really well.”

ALL-MET ELITE

RIVERDALE BAPTIST HS.
UPPER MARLBORO MD.

The Riverdale Baptist coach has been selected to coach the East squad in the McDonald’s All-American Game, scheduled for April 2 in Chicago, Ill.

Last season, he took the Crusaders to the inaugural Capital Beltway Athletic Association title. He has also led Frederick Douglass to its first ever state championship game in 1986, won a state championship with Largo in 1993, a National Championship for Christian Schools with Riverdale in 2004 and 2005 and was subsequently named the NACA National Coach of the Year.

At the All-American game, Wilson will be heading at least one familiar face, as Bishop O’Connell’s Melo Trimble was selected to play for the East team.

“It’s great to have a familiar face in the lineup,” Wilson said. “[Trimble] has done great things in the Washington, D.C. area.”

DEMATHA'S JERAMI GRANT SCORES CAREER HIGH AGAINST DUKE - ALL-MET ELITE

DEMATHA'S
JERAMI GRANT
SCORES CAREER HIGH
AGAINST
DUKE
 ALL-MET ELITE

DEMATHA HS.
HYATTSVILLE MD.

Grant finished the game with a career-high 24 points in Syracuse's 91-89 overtime win over Duke in front of an NCAA on-campus record crowd of 35,446 at the Dome. He made seven of his 11 field goal attempts and made all 10 of his free throws.

Grant got the ball on Syracuse's first four possessions in the overtime period. The results were a dunk, a dunk, a missed shot in the lane and another dunk.

"Jerami's an under-rated scorer for us,'' Tyler Ennis said. "We tried to exploit him and the mismatch he had in overtime until they were able to take it away. Luckily, we were able to get eight or six points out of it.''
