PORTLAND TRAILBLAZERS ASSISTANT COACH - DAVID VANTERPOOL - ALL-MET ELITE

PORTLAND TRAILBLAZERS
ASSISTANT COACH
 DAVID VANTERPOOL
 ALL-MET ELITE

MONTGOMERY BLAIR HS.
SILVER SPRING MD.

Vanterpool, graduated from St. Bonaventure in 1995, and spent the next twelve years playing professional basketball overseas (interspersed with a brief 22-game stint with the Washington Wizards in 2000-01). After a brief assistant coaching stint with CSKA Moscow, Vanterpool spent two years as the head scout for the Oklahoma City Thunder before joining the Portland Trail Blazers as an assistant coach last August.

He's essentially served as Damian Lillard's mentor since joining the Blazers. In an interview prior to last season, Lillard had nothing but glowing things to say about the assistant coach:

"I've been working with coach David a lot," Lillard said. "Even when I first got here we got up every morning to work out before the team workouts and all the lifting. I think we're building a relationship.
I ride with him to the track to do conditioning. We talk there and back... Me and David, we really hit it off when I first got here... We've been working on a lot of pick-and-rolls, in-between stuff, floaters, pull-up jumpers, keeping it simple."

"They say players like coaches who sweat with them," Lillard said. "Every morning, he's out there sweating with me. Working hard with me. He's kind of a younger guy, he knows how we are.
He knows how it is, what we like to do, what we're interested in. To have someone like that who is around, a coach, who isn't afraid to get on you, to tell you what you need to hear, instead of what you want to hear, it's always a good thing."

Brown comes to Bucknell from the small Christ Chapel Academy in Woodbridge, Va., where he has already scored over 2,000 points entering his senior year. He scored 21.9 points per game as a sophomore and 21.6 as a junior, and he has been recognized by the Prince William County News & Messenger as the area’s top scorer and 3-point shooter.

Brown is a two-time Christ Chapel Male Athlete of the Year, and he has been a part of three NVIAC league championship teams. Brown was selected to the 2011-12 and 2012-13 All-VISAA Division III State Teams. He is a two-time winner of the 3-point shooting competition at the Prince William County High School Hoop Fest. In 2013-14 Brown has already been selected to the DMVelite Preseason All-Northern Virginia First Team.

“Stephen is a pure point guard,” said Paulsen. “He is jet quick and a terrific on-ball defender with great intangibles and leadership skills. He is potentially a very dynamic guard on the court and a dynamic leader off the court.”

OBI ROMEO
COMMITS TO
 SAINT JOSEPHS UNIVERSITY
 ALL-MET ELITE

GREENBRIER EAST HS.
WEST VIRGINIA

Obi Romeo, a shot-blocking specialist, committed to the Hawks on Saturday.

He made a big impression this summer on the AAU circuit with East Coast Fusion after an injury kept him out all summer last year; by the time he picked Saint Joseph’s he had offers from Florida Gulf Coast, Georgia Southern, Longwood, East Tennessee State and Marshall.

Romeo is a 6-9 defensive rim protector with the unique ability to block many shots while maintaining possession for his team. Romeo runs the floor and plays really hard when he is on the court and rarely takes plays off. He has decent hands and has shown the ability to catch the ball in traffic and finish with thunderous dunks. He will need to continue to work on his low post moves.

KANSAS JAYHAWK FRESHMAN POINT GUARD - FRANK MASON - ALL-MET ELITE

KANSAS JAYHAWK
 FRESHMAN POINT GUARD
FRANK MASON
 ALL-MET ELITE

Massanutten Military Academy
 Woodstock, Va.

Frank Mason, a point guard from Petersburg, Va., was something of an off-the-radar pickup for Kansas coach Bill Self, who signed Mason when most national recruiting services still had him ranked outside the nation’s top 100.

“I always knew I could play,” Mason says. “I always had the mind-set that I could play with anybody or anywhere.”

But maybe he didn’t quite expect this. Mason will start for No. 5 Kansas as it opens the regular season, filling in for junior Naadir Tharpe in Friday’s game against Louisiana-Monroe at Allen Fieldhouse.  He’s been a rock from an effort standpoint and a focus standpoint,” Self says.

“Now we’re young and we talk about him being a point guard, which he is, but he’s never played point. He’s been asked to get 30 every game and put his head down and go score.”

That was Mason’s role while playing last season at Massanutten Military Academy in Woodstock, Va. And that was part his role while he played alongside current KU guard Andrew White III on “Team Loaded,” a Virginia AAU program.

“When he gets comfortable and turns it loose, we’ll see another gear,” Self says. “because right now he’s kind of playing safe a little bit, which is kind of what I want him to do until he gets comfortable.”

MAXPREPS PRESEASON 2013-2014 BASKETBALL RANKING PAUL VI # 11 - ALL-MET ELITE

MAXPREPS PRESEASON
2013-2014
BASKETBALL RANKING
 PAUL VI # 11
 ALL-MET ELITE

PAUL VI HS.
FAIRFAX VA.

SOURCE: MAXPREPS
No. 11 Paul VI (Fairfax, Va.)
Head coach: Glenn Farello
2012-13 record: 23-8
Players to watch: Marcus Derrickson (6-8, Jr., F, Georgetown verbal commitment), Kevin Dorsey (6-0, Jr., G), Franklin Howard (6-4, Jr., G), Curtis Jones (6-3, So., G), Quadree Smith (6-7, Sr., F), Evan Taylor (6-3, Sr., G)

Breaking down the Panthers

It's hard to believe that a team with wins over national champ Montverde Academy (Fla.) and Oak Hill Academy (Mouth of Wilson, Va.) plus section or state titlists Callaway (Jackson, Miss.), Lake Highland Prep (Orlando, Fla.) and St. John Bosco (Bellflower, Calif.) didn't finish last season as a consensus national Top 25 pick.

Such were the ups and downs of a young team at Paul VI in 2012-13. Consistency and getting a break or two in the daunting Washington Catholic Athletic Conference will be key to improving upon that 23-8 campaign.

Of the 15 players listed on Paul VI's roster, just two are seniors. If Derrickson, Dorsey and Howard can take a big step forward after promising sophomore campaigns, the Panthers should be in the thick of the national picture for the next two seasons.

Smith, who possesses the build of a SEC offensive lineman, goes overlooked with all the young talent despite posting some monster double-doubles as a junior. The 285-pounder had 13 points and 19 boards in the win over Oak Hill Academy.

Taylor will bring experience to the backcourt and is receiving attention from Division I programs. Jones was a huge transfer addition via Highland Springs (Va.). As a freshman, the skilled guard averaged 14.7 points per game.

There are three other promising sophomores new to the roster in 6-6 Tyler Scanlon, 6-9 Jalen Melvin and 6-7 Corey Manigault.

THEODORE ROOSEVELT GUARD - JOHNNIE SHULER COMMITS TO LASALLE UNIVERSITY - ALL-MET ELITE

THEODORE ROOSEVELT
GUARD
 JOHNNIE SHULER
COMMITS
TO
 LASALLE UNIVERSITY
 ALL-MET ELITE

THEODORE ROOSEVELT HS.
WASHINGTON D.C.

Theodore Roosevelt (D.C.) senior guard Johnnie Shuler became the Explorers’ first commitment for the 2014 Class, committing on Tuesday.

“I liked the campus, I liked how the team goes with each other, they have great chemistry together,” he told CoBL by phone. “I’m going to bring hard work, leadership and competitiveness.”

Shuler took an official visit to La Salle this past weekend, his only such visit, before committing. His AAU coach says that Shuler saw that he would fit in at La Salle, and made his decision.

“The offense is very guard-oriented,” Tony Langley, coach of the D.C. Warriors, told CoBL. ”Coach G is a great coach. He fits in with the type of coach that Giannini is.

The offense that he runs gives the guards an opportunity to use their imagination and their creativity to break down the defense, and there are plenty of scoring opportunities on that team.”

He is a pure point guard,” Langley said. “He is a very unselfish player. He has the ability to score. He is very fast. He’s got the Philly style of basketball in terms of being very competitive.

He ended up being a late bloomer. He is just a great kid. He knows the game of basketball. He has a great personality and has never been in trouble. I’m really happy for him, and I think it is a good fit to go to La Salle.”

KANSAS STATE FRESHMAN PREVIEW - NIGEL JOHNSON - ALL-MET ELITE

KANSAS STATE FRESHMAN
PREVIEW
NIGEL JOHNSON
 ALL-MET ELITE

RIVERDALE BAPTIST HS.
UPPER MARLBORO MD.

Johnson, a freshman guard from Ashburn, Virginia, stands at 6’1″ and is another piece of Bruce Weber’s intention to continue playing small ball at K-State.

He was a three-star recruit out of high school with offers from several smaller schools but only one BCS member (the Wildcats).

He played on the prestigious D.C. Assault AAU squad as a prep player.

Seeking stronger competition and more exposure, Johnson played his senior season at Riverdale Baptist School in Upper Marlboro, Maryland. He led his team with 17.9 points and 2.3 rebounds per game and was named a First Team All-Metro player by the Washington Post.

As a member of the D.C. Assault team, he followed a line of prominent former Wildcats to play on the squad including Michael Beasley, Rodney McGruder, Jamar Samuels and Dominique Sutton.

Byron Hawkins, who played AAU basketball for D.C. Assault, chose Towson over offers from Delaware, Fairfield, George Mason, George Washington and St. Joseph’s among others.

"Hawkins is a combo guard that at this point trends closer to a shooting than lead guy, in that his default is to score,”.

“Despite not being a big guard per se, Hawkins can get into the lane or pull up from outside.  He's a quick, savvy offensive-minded guy.”

THE UNIVERSITY OF SAN FRANCISCO will RETIRE the JERSEY of OLLIE JOHNSON - ALL-MET ELITE

THE UNIVERSITY OF SAN FRANCISCO
will
RETIRE the JERSEY
of
OLLIE JOHNSON
ALL-MET ELITE

SPINGARN HS.
WASHINGTON D.C.

University of San Francisco has decided to retire No. 32 in honor of basketball player Oliver “Olli” Johnson, a two-time West Coast Conference Player of the Year and a 1964-65 All-American. The No. 32 jersey will no longer be worn at USF after the ceremony before the Dons game against Santa Clara on Jan. 25 at War Memorial Gym.

Johnson, a 6-foot-7-inch power forward from Washington, D.C. played at USF from 1962-1965. He led the Dons to the conference championship and NCAA tournament appearances in all three seasons, picking up All-WCC honors each year along the way. In his final season, Johnson led all players in scoring and rebounding average during the NCAA tournament, racking up 36 points per game and 18.5 rebounds per game.

With 1,668 points and 1,323 rebounds in his career, Johnson is top-ten all-time for the Dons in both categories. After playing out his eligibility at USF, Johnson continued playing basketball professionally. He was drafted 8th overall by the Boston Celtics, but was cut from the team before making his NBA debut. He then joined the San Francisco Athletic Club in the Amateur Athletic Union and was named an AAU All-American in 1965. The following year, Johnson went abroad to play professionally in Belgium for three seasons.

Johnson will be the 10th Dons athlete to have their number retired. Here’s a quick look at what the other nine Dons did to deserve eternal ownership of their USF jersey number.

AQUILLE CARR DRAFTED BY THE DELEWARE 87ers in THE NBA D - LEAGUE

AQUILLE CARR
DRAFTED
 BY
 THE DELEWARE 87ers
 in
THE NBA D - LEAGUE

PRINCETON DAY ACADEMY
LAUREL MD.

The Sixers took perhaps the best known player in the draft in the third round, when they nabbed Aquille Carr. Carr, who is just 5-7, was once named the "Next Big Thing" by CNN.

Carr is similar to Nate Robinson in his playing style, as he is strong getting to the basket but also has a good vertical leap despite his size.
