Orlando Magic guard Victor Oladipo officially signed with Jordan, the sneaker company announced Wednesday. The second overall pick in June's NBA Draft will wear that brand's shoes throughout his rookie season.

Oladipo joins Washington Wizards forward Otto Porter, and Charlotte Bobcats big man Cody Zeller as the newest additions to the Jordan brand. They were the second, third, and fourth overall picks in the Draft.

"We are excited to add Victor, Otto and Cody to the Jordan family," Michael Jordan said in a press release. "As we continue to expand and improve our performance product, these young players will be a big part of our efforts around the game of basketball."

Oladipo said at Magic Media Day that he had signed with Jordan. According to the company, he will begin the season wearing the Jordan Prime.Fly shoe in games.

"I really connected with Coach Donovan. He gets straight to the point, and I need that and I like that," said Robinson, who is the eighth-ranked small forward in his class. "I really felt I could trust him."
The Gators are getting a long, athletic forward who can pass and shoot well from behind the arc. He blossomed this summer and has one of the highest ceilings in his class. The 6-foot-8, 180-pound small forward still needs to develop his body and adapt to the physicality and speed of the game, but once he does, he'll be a star at the next level.

As a junior, Robinson led his Christchurch (Va.) School team to a VISAA Division II championship; the school's first in 30 years. He was named VISAA Division II player of the year.

In the offseason, Robinson played for the AAU program Richmond Squires, which he credits for helping him develop confidence in his game.

"It put me on the big stage and gave me a platform to succeed," Robinson said.

Durant poured in a game-high 42 points in 39 minutes, making nine of 24 shots and 22 of 24 free throws. He scored 15 points in the fourth quarter, often keeping the Jazz at bay behind free throw attempts. He made eight of 10 in the final period.

It wasn't how things were supposed to be, not with OKC having an entire preseason to prepare without Westbrook, and the Thunder can only hope Durant doesn't have to muster similar performances going forward to keep this team afloat until Westbrook returns.

But not even Durant was sure of how high his plate might pile up.

“I don't know,” he said. “We just got to take it a game at a time and see how teams play us.”

DUNBAR HS.
BALTIMORE MD.

Mt. Zion is located in northeast Baltimore, not far from Morgan State University, and home now to 14 members of this year's basketball team. Among them are Markus Oliphant of Arundel High School in Gambrills and Anthony Bennett of Aberdeen.

They play their games at the Carmelo Anthony Recreation Center in east Baltimore. RodneyElliott and Brian Scott are Rodrick Harrison's assistant coaches.

"We feel we have a lot to offer as coaches," Scott said. "Everybody knows Rodney played at Maryland, went to some NBA camps, had a great career overseas. Coach Harrison was a Division I point guard at UMBC, played Division II basketball at Barton College. So these kids are getting a lot of experienced advice. So when they leave our program, we feel they'll be prepared to play at the next level."

Elliott said the coaches' goal was to draw players from within a 50-mile radius of Baltimore.
"If they think they have the ability to play at the next level, we want to know who they are," Elliott said. "It's giving them that extra year -- that extra year to get stronger, get faster, and learning the college game as quickly as possible is big, because that transition from high school to college is very different."

Harrison said the coaches wanted to give kids the opportunity to mature academically and athletically.

"It's a great opportunity for not only the kids here in Baltimore and the Maryland area, but also from around the East Coast," he said. "We even have a kid from Australia (6-foot-9 forward Jon Janssen). We want to improve their grades and SAT scores so maybe they have the opportunity to receive a free scholarship to play ball."

"For me to be where I came from, I'm not supposed to be here. And with all the guys I used to hang around with? I was not supposed to be the first one."
Oladipo grew up in Upper Marlboro, Md., a part of Prince George's County, which is rich with basketball talent (the current crop of NBA players from that county include Durant, Ty Lawson, Jeff Green, Roy Hibbert, Jarrett Jack, Sam Young and a handful more).

Oladipo was mostly unaware of the depth and quality of talent in his area, because his father didn't let any of his children outside the house very often. Part of it was his strict nature, and part of it was because the family didn't live in the safest of neighborhoods (the family moved to a more rural section of town after the home's front door was knocked down while they watched television).

"It's my love for the game that made me do what I do. I pushed myself.

"Basketball was kind of like my brother. It was something I could go do and just be myself."

At St. Jerome Academy, a private elementary and middle school about 45 minutes away from his home, Oladipo played on B teams until sixth grade. He played mostly power forward and center because of his height and was known more as the "hustle guy."

By the time Oladipo had to choose a high school to attend, he had no idea where he'd go. His father kept asking him, but it wasn't until a friend's dad took him to a game at DeMatha, a Catholic high school featuring a tradition-rich basketball team, that Oladipo finally answered.

"I kind of fell in love with them there," he said.

When it came time to try out for the freshman team, Oladipo was one of about a hundred students trying to get the attention of coaches.

"I stood out, one, because I wanted to play defense and, two, because of how athletic I was," he said, though he didn't consider that the start of a memorable career. "I didn't really go crazy or anything. I was happy, but for some reason I wasn't really joyful or anything like that."

Perhaps it was because his friends, like Quinn Cook (now at Duke), Bryon Allen (George Mason) and Jerian Grant (Notre Dame) were better than him.

Perhaps it was because the reception at home would be lukewarm at best -- at least from his dad. DeMatha coaches saw something in Oladipo, so head coach Mike Jones referred Oladipo to an AAU team then named Triple Threat (it's now Team Takeover).

That's where Oladipo met Price, who coached the ninth-grade team.

"Upon meeting him, he just became one of my favorites, and it actually didn't have anything to do with basketball," Price said. "One of the hardest things to find is a guy that's willing to listen and hang his hat on everything you give him. And he was that kid.

"We had to do a lot of mentally grooming him, making him understand that he is good, because he had no clue."

How could he know? On the freshman team he was essentially just another guy. At home he got no feedback, his father constantly telling his children to "face their books." He couldn't compare himself with his friends, who had no such crisis of confidence.

In Price, Oladipo discovered someone who wanted to unearth something special in him. So the lanky kid became a sponge. A well-mannered, intelligent, eager sponge -- with an especially strict dad. This AAU thing required more time away from his books, more time away from his home, more time committed to a "hobby."

In fact, Oladpio didn't even think varsity basketball was in his near future.

"He's on our team, he's an integral part of our team, he's feeling good about himself, so I started asking him if he's gonna play varsity next year," Price said. "His first response was, 'Huh?' "I said, 'What do you mean, "Huh?"'

"And I can still remember his quote to this day: 'Varsity? They're good.'"

Price's immediate retort was, "So what are you?"

Oladipo hadn't given varsity nearly as much thought as you'd expect from someone who had NBA dreams.

Price, who Oladipo had grown attached to, offered a blunt dose of reality: Make varsity, or this whole experience ends.

It wasn't so much an ultimatum as it was setting an alarm clock for Oladipo.

"One day I just stopped and I said, 'Listen, I want you to know something,'" Price said. "'Do you enjoy playing for us? Do you like sleeping over at my house? Do you consider us like a family? Well lemme just tell you something. There's no way in hell that we're going to have a 10th grader that's playing JV on our roster. So you got to find a way to make varsity.'"

That meant Oladipo would have to attend 6 a.m. workouts the summer after his freshman year. It was no easy task, given that DeMatha was nearly an hour from home.

Not only did he show up, but he was so energetic in the workouts that DeMatha coach Mike Jones called Oladipo's AAU coaches to ask how they motivated him.

Oladipo kept showing up, even after he suffered a fracture in his foot during AAU season and couldn't actually participate.

Jones kept telling Oladipo he didn't have to, but Oladipo kept showing up, offering to help in any way he could, even by sweeping the floors.

Oladipo's response: "I'm OK, Coach Mike. I just don't want y'all to forget about me."

"That's who the kid was," Price said. "How could you not fall in love with a kid who has that determination? He was raised great -- I mean, we can't take any credit for how he was raised -- and he's just waiting to get molded."

That experience helped Oladipo make varsity, though he wasn't a starter until his senior season. And while his team won the city title his junior year, and he was averaging a double-double and playing relentless defense nightly, Oladipo wasn't being widely recruited.

During the weekend, some of the nation’s youngest and most talented prospects converged in New York City for the third annual Super 16 freshmen and sophomore all-star games.

In addition to the games, this year’s event featured an eight-station combine-style training session that was composed of basketball and cross-fit challenges the previous day. All photos credited to Steven Counts / stevencounts.com

Thon Maker, 7-0, Center, Carlisle School (VA), 2016: The seven-footer took a page off Shaq’s all-star games strategy and decided he was going to try out his guard skills this afternoon.

At one point in the second half, Maker dribbled down the floor before blowing by Bryce Aiken after catching him with an expected spin-move, and ultimately stepping in to hit a three-pointer from the left wing. He would hit another three-pointer a couple of minutes later.

Relatively speaking to other seven-footers at this level of basketball, he demonstrated a nice stroke from the free throw line. It was on the defensive end that Maker made the biggest impact.

Because of his size, it would obviously be expected that his presence alone would make a difference in the paint, but the kid actually showed great intensity, constantly contesting shots as far as out on the perimeter, while attempting to give his team second shot opportunities on the other end of the floor. The hustle and effort was admirable.

Written by - Bruce Johnson
When he left Georgetown University, Victor Page was headed to the NBA with a “can’t miss” label on his jersey; But Victor Page’s pro career was soon blown apart.

The violent streets that killed his mother and father were also calling Victor and eventually they got him. Until “All or Nothing, The Victor Page Story, no one has been able to uncover the secrets of what really happened to this incredible basketball prospect.

Bruce Johnson is the first reporter to get Page to give up the good and the incredible bad events! When they recruited Page to the prestigious university and legendary basketball program, neither John Thompson nor the Georgetown University administration saw this tragedy coming. Or did they?

Some argue that the kids from DC’s streets had no place at Georgetown University in the first place. That Victor Page was lethal from the start! Others argue that Page was the kind of project that the Jesuit school was meant to take on!
