2013 DunkDog All-American Game - MATT COLEMAN - ALL-MET ELITE

2013 DunkDog
All-American Game
MATT COLEMAN
ALL-MET ELITE

MAURY HS.
NORFOLK VA.

Ran by DunkDog president Spencer Pulliam, the event brought 20 of the nation’s top rising freshmen to his hometown of Greensboro, NC. The event was held on the campus of Greensboro Day School, a prestigious private school within the Piedmont Triad.

Matt Coleman, 6-0, PG, Maury (VA) HS
The next in line in the Hampton Roads area is Matt Coleman. Hype started to build around him when he was starting for the legendary Boo Williams AAU program at the 16-U level, playing two years above his age group. Coleman showed off a filthy crossover, was a blur in the open court, and shocked onlookers earlier in the weekend when he had a two-hand dunk in traffic. Already owning an offer for Virginia, expect plenty more high-major programs to follow suit once they set eyes on this lefty.

ROBERT JOHNSON - VIRGINIA IS FOR BASKETBALL LOVERS - ALL-MET ELITE

ROBERT JOHNSON

BASKETBALL LOVERS
ALL-MET ELITE

Benedictine College Prep
Richmond Va.

Robert Johnson, a 6-foot-3, 190-pound guard, who plays at Benedictine College Prep in Richmond, Va. According to ESPN.com, Rivals.com and Scout.com, Johnson is a four-star prospect

Johnson received his first scholarship offer from UNC-Greensboro’s Wes Miller last year, but has steadily raised his stock over the summer. With his play at NBPA Camp, the LeBron James Skills Academy and most recently at the Nike Peach Jam, Johnson has been gaining a lot of interest from major college programs. He already has several scholarship offers and has narrowed his current list to seven schools: Florida State, Georgetown, Indiana, Miami (FL), North Carolina, Pittsburgh, Virginia. Louisville has also expressed interest in the combo guard.

Though Indiana didn’t really express interest until late last month, assistant coach and recruiting coordinator Kenny Johnson has been familiar with the Virginia guard and his family for quite some time.

“Coach Johnson was actually recruiting him when he was at Towson,” according to Johnson’s father, Robert Sr. “Then when he made the transition over to Indiana, Robert was actually playing for the D.C. Assault at the time and he watched him then. He’s been kind of tracking him.” Indiana really stepped up their interest in Johnson when Hoosiers coach Tom Crean got to see Johnson average 20.2 points and shoot 46.2 percent on 3-pointers at the Nike Peach Jam.

The Hoosiers pulled out all stops this past weekend to try to impress Johnson. Johnson was escorted by his AAU coach, the legendary Boo Williams, who also happens to be the uncle of IU freshman guard Troy Williams.

The Hoosiers had two of the top four picks in June’s NBA Draft with Cody Zeller going No. 4 to Charlotte and Oladipo going No. 2 overall to Orlando. The IU presence at the top of the lottery also impressed Johnson Sr.

“That’s big, that’s big. The player development is huge. I watch Indiana and (Victor) Oladipo, his freshman year, was really under the radar,” he said. “He wasn’t a great shooter and he’s pretty much always had a good motor, but I think Tom Crean and the coaching staff did a great job with allowing him to keep the motor but they worked on the other facets of his game. I watched how they developed him and it’s great.”

Guard Byron Hawkins transfers to Wise from Good Counsel
Hawkins spent the past two seasons at Good Counsel, where he led the team in scoring with 18.1 points per game last season. One of the area’s top recruits in the class of 2014, Hawkins announced he would leave the school to reclassify in the class of 2015 and join his DC Assault teammate Hassan Hussein at Vermont Academy.

But when Hussein’s plans changed and Vermont Academy Coach Jesse Bopp left for VCU, Hawkins reconsidered.

Hawkins, who has scholarship offers from Delaware, George Mason, George Washington, UNC-Greensboro, St. Joseph’s, and William & Mary, among others.

The Pumas of Wise return four of their top five leading scorers from a team that went 19-6 in 2012-13, including a 14-4 league record and an appearance in the Maryland 4A South title game.

CHRISTCHURCH SCHOOL
CHRISTCHURCH VA.

"He finished his junior year with no offers. No letters or no offers,” Squire said. “As a junior in high school. None.”

The junior year Squire speaks of was the 2011-2012 academic year at Manchester High School in Chesterfield, Virginia.

Originally a member of the class of 2013, Robinson, along with his parents, made the decision to reclassify to 2014 and transfer to the Christchurch School for his final two years of high school.

As a junior at Christchurch, Robinson continued to improve at a rapid rate. He grew several inches to his current height — 6-foot-8 — and this past spring and summer, he rose to national prominence at events such as the Reebok Breakout Camp, the adidas EuroCamp in Treviso, Italy, the NBPA Top 100 Camp and the LeBron James Skills Academy.

“This was a guy that a lot of people still didn’t know about, but was given the opportunity to get on this stage and this platform and perform,” Squire said. “If he performed, it would take things to new heights. And that’s exactly what happened. I’ve seen a lot. I would compare Devin’s story to the Tracy McGrady ordeal.”

Indiana, along with Connecticut, Florida, Notre Dame and Oklahoma State, are some of the schools Robinson is strongly considering. He’ll take an official visit to Oklahoma State on September 13 and Indiana on October 4 for Hoosier Hysteria.

The 6-foot point guard from Norfolk was a participant in Virginia’s Elite Camp that wrapped up on Saturday. He broke into a wide smile when asked about receiving a scholarship offer at such a young age.

“It was surprising,” said Coleman, who is entering his freshman season at Maury High School in Norfolk, “because I didn’t know they were looking at me like that.

“And then when I got the call from [Bennett], he said, ‘We want to offer...you’re so young, but I like you.’ I was excited. I was like, ‘Wow!’ It was a blessing, but I still have to be humble about this experience because I have a long way to go.”

Coleman, who also has an offer from Old Dominion (where former Virginia coach Jeff Jones recently took over) said Bennett likes that he is a southpaw.

“He said, ‘I like lefties and I think you have the potential to be great,’” Coleman said. “He said, ‘You’re not at it right now, but in the future you could be.’ He kept it real, which is what I liked.”

2016 Paul VI (VA) guard Curtis Jones was one of the top performers at the camp. As he will transfer to the Virginia powerhouse program for his sophomore year, Jones has improved a lot this summer as he is more athletic and much quicker. His handle has improved and he does a good job of adjusting to contact when attacking the basket. A major improvement from how he played back in June, Jones is living up to his reputation. This has earned him offers from NC State, Richmond and Virginia Tech with upcoming visits in August to Virginia and VCU.

2016 DeMatha (MD) power forward Joe Hampton has plenty of talent for a big 6-foot-6 power forward. While he has the body of a power forward, he has a fantastic skill set. Hampton moves well, can handle the ball, has a shot and a strong post game. His agility and athleticism isn't quite there yet, but he runs the floor extremely well and makes a great impact on the defensive side. He isn't the type of player for every coach, but one who will use him to their advantage. He is versatile and can do a lot more than simply post up and bang on the boards. Xavier has already offered, while Syracuse, Virginia Tech, West Virginia, Maryland, Miami and Notre Dame are interested.

MAGRUDER HS.
ROCKVILLE MD

Findlay Prep tapped a "Junkyard Dog" to serve as head coach of the school's basketball program.
The college preparatory academy named former NBA player Jerome Williams as the men's basketball head coach.

According to the Henderson academy's website, Williams, an assistant coach for the Pilots last season, will take over for outgoing Todd Simon, who took an assistant coaching job with University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

Simon led the program to a 35-1 record during his only season as the head coach. He filled in for former head coach Michael Peck, who accepted a similar role before the 2012-2013 season with the NBA Developmental League's Idaho Stampede.

The school said Williams has been with the program since 2009, serving in various roles including director of player development.

Williams, 40, who has been known in the NBA under the "Junkyard Dog" moniker, played nine seasons in the league, last playing with the New York Knicks in 2005.
"I'm blessed and honored to be the next head coach of this elite program," said Williams. "I thank the Findlay Education Foundation and Henderson International for allowing me to step into the shoes of Todd Simon and Michael Peck on a quest to win another national championship and produce productive college scholarship student athletes."

Romelo Trimble – 6’3 Point Guard, Team USA 2014 Blue (Bishop O’Connell HS – Arlington, Virginia)

Romelo Trimble was another guard that grabbed attention throughout the tournament. Not due to mind-blowing statistics or signature plays, but because Trimble seems to make the right play in all the key situations. Poise under pressure is something that you can’t really teach, and Trimble had plenty of it. He was the guy that seemed to make the proper pass or wise decision when several options were available, and he possessed the ability to shoot from mid-range as well as from beyond the arc.

Having played in the tournament in years past, Trimble definitely seemed to be at an advantage in terms of being able to pace the action, pick his spots to assert himself and incorporate teammates. As a perimeter defender, Trimble pestered opposing ballhandlers, and had a keen sense of how to navigate around the pick-and-roll. Voluntarily comparing his experiences playing in AAU to that of adidas Nations, Trimble described the differences.

“Unlike in AAU, all the players here at adidas Nations are good, athletic and challenging,” Trimble said. “You don’t feel like you have to take over the game and make every play like in AAU, because the talent level is pretty much the same across the board.”
Trimble is hungry to continue developing as a point guard, and looks to improve his ballhandling and playmaking. He will undoubtedly continue his development as a future member of the Terrapins, as Trimble has committed to the University of Maryland.
