2014 guard Phil Booth of Mount St. Joseph’s High School (Baltimore, Md.) took to Twitter on Tuesday to announce his decision to verbally commit to Villanova.
Booth, who plays with the highly-regarded AAU squad Team Takeover (D.C.), is Villanova’s second commit to the 2014 class.

Booth’s high school coach Pat Clatchey had nothing but high praise for his rising senior. Clatchey spoke about how he thinks Booth will transition to the college game.

“He’ll be a terrific college player; from a physical standpoint he has the ability to make others around him better,” Clatchey said. “I don’t think he has a lot of weaknesses. I think he can help a team win in a lot of different ways.”

GONZAGA HS.
WASHINGTON D.C.

As a graduate from Gonzaga College High, he has the local roots. As a standout at Georgetown University from 1990-1994, he earned a spot on the Big East All-Rookie Team, started 128 consecutive games and finished 18th in all-time scoring at the school and 15th in rebounding. As a former NBA player with Golden State and eight years playing professionally overseas, respect from his players likely won’t be an issue.

“I think my experience as a player, as a [Washington Catholic Athletic Conference] student-athlete, my experience at the professional level, my experience coaching and teaching — they obviously thought I was the right guy for the position,” Churchwell said.

Last season, he coached Benedictine to a 31-4 record and a VISAA Division I state title, beating out WCAC champ O’Connell for the trophy. Preceding his one season at Benedictine in Richmond, Va., Churchwell coached for six years at Harrison High in Georgia. Most impressive, however, may have been his 3-1 record against WCAC opponents this past season, which included wins over O’Connell, DeMatha and Bishop Ireton.

“It’s very exciting, obviously, coming back to the WCAC, it’s very exciting,” Churchwell said. “I’m very familiar with the talent there.”

DC Assault fulfills July quest with Fab 48 title - ALL-MET ELITE

DC Assault fulfills July quest
 with
 Fab 48 title
ALL-MET ELITE

During the spring, the DC Assault 17U basketball team set a goal to go undefeated in July. The Washington, D.C.-based powerhouse completed its mission Sunday at Bishop Gorman High.
Romelo Trimble and Donte Grantham each scored 14 points, and DC Assault capped a 16-0 month by holding off Deron Williams Elite of Dallas 60-56 to win the invitational bracket championship at the Las Vegas Fab 48.

“This is our last tournament together and my last tournament before going off to college and stuff like that,” said Trimble, a 6-foot-3-inch combo guard who has orally committed to Maryland. “Last year we got upset here, so this here meant a lot.”

DC Assault, which went 8-0 in the Fab 48 and also in the Under Armour Summer Jam that ended July 21 in Mequon, Wis., took control early in the second half with a 10-2 run, but needed two free throws by point guard Byron Hawkins with seven seconds left to seal the victory.

Lightning-quick guard Erick Neal led a balanced offense for Deron Williams Elite with 11 points, including three free throws with nine seconds to play that cut DC Assault’s lead to 58-56. Reserve Takedrick Brown supplied eight points for Deron Williams Elite, which had only two field goals in the final 6:06 against DC Assault’s 2-3 zone.

“They’re a one-on-one team, so that (defense) hurt them,” Trimble said.

DC Assault led only 41-40 until Rashard Kelly, a 6-6 forward with offers from Boston College and several mid-majors, scored eight points during the key 10-2 run. Brown’s putback brought Deron Williams Elite to within 53-51, but 6-11 center Chinanu Onunaku slammed home a miss and Grantham got behind the defense for a big one-handed dunk that gave DC Assault a six-point lead with 2:45 left.

“I just filled the lane and nobody stepped up, so I just handled it,” said the 6-8 Grantham, who is ranked No. 73 by Rivals.com and is being recruited by the likes of Cincinnati, Clemson, Miami, Penn State and West Virginia.

The sweet-shooting Trimble starred during the first half, making three 3-pointers and scoring 11 points. His third 3 put DC Assault on top 19-14, although Deron Williams Elite responded with an 18-5 spurt in which four players hit 3s.

Brown’s 3 gave Deron Williams Elite a 32-24 lead with 6:05 left before Grantham scored seven points in a 13-2 run that gave DC Assault a 37-34 halftime lead.

Hawkins added nine points for DC Assault. Jeremy Combs, Tim Priller and Omar Sherman finished with seven points each for Deron Williams Elite.

Former Gonzaga HS player - D.J. Fenner - Washington State Player of Year - ALL-MET ELITE

D. J. Fenner joined Nate Britt and Kris Jenkins at Mater Dei in Bethesda MD. in the 2007-08 school year.

After the three dominated middle school opposition, it was thought they would play together in high school - most of the region's top private schools recruited all three.

But while Jenkins and Britt enrolled at Gonzaga, Fenner made a last-minute decision to move back to Seattle.

After one year in the Pacific Northwest, though, Fenner returned to join his buddies at Gonzaga, partly because Derrick Fenner convinced his son that he would be better challenged playing basketball in the Washington area.

"I was doing well, too, but the competition [in Seattle] was different," Fenner said. "It was hard to compare."

Fenner spent his sophomore season at Gonzaga College High School in Washington D.C. Prior to his sophomore year, the Seattle superstar played his freshman year at Seattle Prep. In June 2012, Fenner moved back to Seattle and enrolled into his former high school Seattle Prep over the summer for his junior and senior year.

In 2013 Fenner finished second in the area in scoring at 27.3 points per game. He scored fewer than 20 only three times all season. He scored more than 30 nine times. He scored 40 twice. In two loser-out games at the end of the season, he combined for 75 points

Fenner committed to the University of Nevada. The 6'6 senior shooting guard from Seattle Prep is regarded as one of the top players in the state of Washington.

Fenner was juggling offers from UC Irvine, Utah and Hawaii, but made his decision after making an official visit to Nevada in early September.

"The coaches made it clear that I would be playing the two-guard position and that I would have a real opportunity to get on the floor my freshman year. That was very important to me," Fenner said.

Friday's action of Under Armour Summer Jam presented by NY2LA Sports continued to reveal some of the top players in the nation, along with some of the top sleepers in the nation. Recruits continued to stand out and play hard against tough competition on day three.

At this time last year, DC Assault was looking for an impact big man to pair up with Maryland bound guard Romelo Trimble. Also, at this time last year, most didn't know who Chinanu Onuaku was. As some still consider him to be the little brother of former Syracuse player Arinze Onuaku, he has made a name and reputation for himself.

The 2014 power forward is a big body who continues to get better, Onuaku can rebounds, pass, use his hook shot, and is improving his post moves. He is a great defender and uses his body to his advantage to bang in the post.

His plan, for now, is to cut his list to ten schools after the summer. Following that he will cut it to 5 schools before his senior season and then take official visits during his season. Miami, Xavier, Seton Hall, DePaul and Cincinnati have done the best job of contacting him the most, but more schools could come in.

All staffs of these schools were tracking Onuaku throughout Summer Jam, including Cincinnati head coach Mick Cronin who was in the front row for him last night

JERAMI GRANT – Wesley Johnson, Jonny Flynn and Donte Green are the most recent examples of Syracuse players struggling to reach their potential in the NBA. Grant, who will be a sophomore next season, already has an idea of what it takes to excel at the next level being the son of Harvey Grant and the nephew of former World Champion Horace Grant. The Orange reached the Final Four this past season with Grant contributing in a reduced role off the bench. Jim Boeheim will need someone to step up to replace a lot of the offensive production that was lost with the departures of Michael Carter-Williams, James Southerland and Brandon Triche. Grant and C.J. Fair are going to be a devastating combination at forward for the Orange in their inaugural tour of the ACC. Grant would have started right away had he went to a less reputable program. Instead he spent his freshman year learning and developing, which often times ends up being a beneficial move. A breakout season is on the horizon for the DeMatha product, and it could shorten his stay in upstate New York.

 CINCINNATI.COM
NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C. — On the summer high school travel basketball circuit, coaches from every Division I college program jockey to see and be seen by top recruits. It is also becoming increasingly common for coaches from high school basketball powerhouses such as Oak Hill Academy (Mouth of Wilson, Va.), Findlay Prep (Henderson, Nev.) or Huntington (W.Va.) Prep to be at the same events, doing the same thing.

“The high school situation has really changed,” said long
time summer basketball coach Boo Williams of Hampton, Va., while at the Nike Peach Jam tournament here. “It used to be just Oak Hill and Flint Hill (Oakton, Va.). Now, it’s Findlay Prep, Huntington Prep, Montverde (Fla.) Academy and a lot of other basketball academies. Now you see a lot of guys changing high schools going into their junior year because of the high school recruiting. High schools are beginning to be like a mini AAU season. You have to be careful with some of the schools. I don’t have a problem with the legitimate schools, but some of these schools are not legitimate.” The spread of basketball academies and their recruitment of top players around the country can complicate things for college coaches.

“Our recruitment gets mixed up in the high school recruitment,” said Notre Dame coach Mike Brey. “Sometimes the young man can’t concentrate as much on the college decision because he still has to make a high school decision. Any time we’re in that situation, we wait until a player’s high school decision is made and the head is clearer and then you can barrel in there and talk with the parent.”
Brey said it’s always a concern when a player he’s recruiting switches high schools.

“You develop relations with a high school coach and guidance counselors or whatever and when the player changes (schools), you worry how that’s going to affect us, especially if it is only a verbal commitment. The old high school coach may have been a great ally of ours all along. And all of a sudden, they’re going to high school X and you know what, they’re an ally of that program. That’s one of the things that you’re thinking through as a staff when you try to figure out if that player’s recruitment is a good investment in your time. Let’s not waste time if we’re not going to get him.”

Oak Hill assistant coach Eddie Knudsen said it’s obvious there’s a lot more competition from various basketball academies. He said he was at Peach Jam this past week to scout players for Oak Hill and to scout opponents for Williams.

“I think the reason more (basketball academies) are cropping up is there’s enough talent to go around,” said Knudsen, who also teaches English at Oak Hill. “But you have to look at the school’s setting and education. Players still come to Oak Hill to get their grades right and to get a good education.”

Prep powerhouses such as Montverde Academy, Oak Hill or Findlay Prep offer players a chance to travel the country playing high school opponents, but the real benefit for many players of going to those schools is at practice.

Canadian Montaque Gill-Caesar, who made a splash in the 16-under division of the Peach Jam, honed his skills by going up against top 2013 recruit Andrew Wiggins every day in practice last season at Huntington Prep.

“A lot of them are really sold on, and I can’t fault them for this, the competition in practice,” Brey said. “A lot of the players are the best players in their county or high school and they’ll get a couple of good games a year but in practices, there isn’t much competition. If I had a son like that, I don’t think I could fault him if he says, ‘Dad, every day, I am going to play against a Division I prospect in practice.’ ”

Jonathan Laurent, a small forward for the 16-under squad for E1T1 Elite, averaged 18 points and nine rebounds a game as a sophomore last year for Freedom High in Orlando. He said he has been contacted by Montverde Academy and other schools.

“It’s tempting because they’re a school that has won a national championship and you’re at a small school,” Laurent said. “But, nobody wants to leave a school if you’re the man at your school. You don’t want to go somewhere where you don’t know what’s going to happen – if you’ll even be able to play. Then again, you want to play the best and these schools all have good reps and they get players to college.” ■

Robert Johnson, a 6-foot-3, class of 2014 guard from Richmond (Va.), was scouted heavily by the Hoosier staff at the Nike Peach Jam and received a scholarship offer over the weekend.
The four-star guard averaged 20.2 points and shot 46.2 percent on 3-pointers at the Peach Jam for Boo Williams.

Up to this point, Johnson said five schools — Florida State, Villanova, Wake Forest, Virginia and Alabama — have recruited him most consistently, but he’s hearing from several new suitors after his strong play at the Peach Jam.
“Besides Indiana, I’ve heard from North Carolina, Syracuse, Memphis, Cincinnati and UCLA,” he said.

The next step in the process for Johnson will be pairing down his list, which could continue to grow as he’s evaluated by more schools this month, and formulate a plan to move forward in the process. Indiana is one school Johnson said he’ll definitely visit.

Johnson also has a pretty good idea of what he’ll be looking for in his future home.

“Just somewhere that, number one, I can come in and compete for playing time as a freshman,” he said. “Somewhere I have a good relationship with the coaches and where I feel comfortable going to school with them. And somewhere that fits my style of play and I can see myself being really useful in the system they run.”

Looking for a good reason that Obi Romeo has gone from not playing basketball to an impressive recruit with a number of mid-to-high major looks? Try his workout regimen.
“I do Crossfit every day, until Sunday; I don’t do anything on Sunday,” he said. “I do Crossfit an hour, then sometimes I lift on my own, sometimes I will use two hours, go shoot around. Every day, Monday through Saturday, all my programs should take me like five hours.
“I dedicated myself to this program, I work out a lot. I want to be part of the game, I want to learn.”

The 6-10 Romeo, a native of Nigeria, boasts an impressive 92-inch wingspan with enormous hands to match, allowing him to alter quite a number of shots on the defensive end of the court. His offensive game is still a ways behind his defensive instincts and timing, but he’s got good hands and showed off nice touch around the rim.

Asked about his recruiting, Romeo named St. Joseph’s, West Virginia, Virginia, Arkansas, College of Charleston, Florida International and Longwood, though he refused to comment on which were offers and which were just interest. It doesn’t seem like any decision is pending.

One of a number of skilled wings with some serious length, Robinson is a 6-foot-8 small forward with a nearly seven-foot wingspan that allowed him to be an impressive defence presence in the post. The Virginia native was a largely unknown product until last year, when he joined the Richmond Squires AAU program and his recruiting started to take off.

Robinson has a laundry list of offers, and he wouldn’t name any of his offers to avoid insulting programs he might have left out. According to ESPN.com, Robinson’s list includes schools like UConn, George Mason, Virginia Commonwealth, Virginia Tech, Rutgers and more; so far he’s taken unofficial visits to Georgetown, VCU and Virginia. The only schools that haven’t offered are the blue-chip programs, and Robinson said he’s been hearing from Louisville, North Carolina and Duke, among others.

ALL-MET ELITE

The documentary follows highly recruited ‘blue chip’ prospects, their families and their teams as they navigate the shaky terrain of the AAU circuit in pursuit of their dreams, examining the shifting nature of ‘amateurism’ in modern-day American sports, specifically exploring the cross-pollination between the NBA and AAU culture.

NBA Digital's extensive NBA Summer League 2013 coverage -- the first opportunity to see many of the league's top rookies in action -- will include 62 live game telecasts in 16 days on NBA TV, and all games live via the NBA Summer League Live subscription package on NBA.com and NBA Mobile beginning Sunday, July 7. Live event coverage will feature 24 Summer League games from Orlando (July 7-12), held at the Magic's practice facility at Amway Center, and 38 Summer League games from Las Vegas, held at the Thomas & Mack Center and COX Pavilion from July 12-22, including the first-ever championship game on Monday, July 22, at 9 p.m. ET.

Victor Oladipo said some of the subtle differences between college and the NBA that he’s already picked up on is the quickness of the game and the shorter time that teammates come open. He said he’s already beginning to understand the importance of spacing in the NBA game and he likes how defenders aren’t allowed to camp in the lane because of the defensive three-seconds rule.

As for playing point guard in the NBA, Oladipo doesn’t see it as being as big of an adjustment as some might think. He often initiated pick-and-roll plays at Indiana, and he’s still working before practice every day to improve his ball-handling. As for defending other point guards, it’s a challenge that he said he is more than up to the task of doing.

``I’m a guard, so whatever guard position they want me to run I feel comfortable running it,’’ Oladipo said. ``I pretty much did the same thing at Indiana and ran some (point guard) there. I’ll just do whatever they need in order to help us win. If they need me to play there for us to win, that sounds good to me.’’

UNDENIABLE CAMP
 JOE HAMPTON
ALL-MET ELITE

DEMATHA HS.
HYATTSVILLE MD.

Joe Hampton has been invited to compete at the Under Armour "Undeniable" Grind Session in Los Angeles.

The camp, which is by invite only, will take place June 30-July 2 and will feature 29 of the nation's best high school prospects and another handful of college players who will serve as counselors.

The event is closed to college coaches, but is sanctioned by the NBA and will include scouts from all 30 NBA teams.

Hampton is just a rising sophomore, but Maryland and a number of other high-major schools already have him on their radar.

Already 6-6, 225 pounds, Hampton will likely grow into a versatile power forward at the college level. The lefty has shown some shooting touch from the outside, but does most of his work by using his size on the interior

Romelo Trimble has been invited to compete at the Under Armour "Undeniable" Grind Session in Los Angeles.

The camp, which is by invite only, will take place June 30-July 2 and will feature 29 of the nation's best high school prospects and another handful of college players who will serve as counselors.
The event is closed to college coaches, but is sanctioned by the NBA and will include scouts from all 30 NBA teams.

Trimble committed to Maryland in December and helped to clear up questions about who would be playing the point guard position in 2014.

Trimble is a lead guard who has the ability to both facilitate and create for himself. His commitment is also important because he is a local prospect and member of D.C. Assault, the powerhouse local AAU program.

B.J. Stith, a rising senior who has pledged to play basketball at the University of Virginia, is expected to transfer to Oak Hill Academy next fall, said his father, Bryant Stith. B.J. toured the campus during spring break and got to know coach Steve Smith.

The reason for the move, Bryant said, is to give B.J. the highest level of competition possible before he enrolls at Virginia.

Oak Hill, located in Mouth of Wilson, Va., plays some of the nation’s toughest squads and has been called home by a number of future NBA players, including Dwight Howard and Kevin Durant.

Raised in Washington D.C., the 6’3”, 230 lb, two-time “Red Bull King of the Rock” champion received his nickname, “Baby Shaq” in school when teammates said he would grab every rebound that came off the glass. After watching Jones play, Shaquille O’Neal himself said, “This guy deserves to be in the league.” Jones attended and played for The College of Southern Maryland averaging 20 points and 10 rebounds. He was also the 2003 MVP of The Goodman League, the most competitive amateur basketball league in all of D.C. Most recently, Jones played for the Pro AM league, the Beltway Bombers in Washington DC. and for the Washington Greenhawks. Jones has ball handling skills that go unmatched even in the NBA and is considered to be nearly unguardable on the court.

BALTIMORE'S FINEST 17U AAU - TEMPLE TEAM CAMP - ALL-MET ELITE

BALTIMORE'S FINEST
17U AAU
TEMPLE TEAM CAMP
 ALL-MET ELITE

Baltimore’s Finest (Md.)
Most of the teams that competed at Temple were fairly familiar with each other, all being from the Philadelphia area. Baltimore’s Finest, an AAU team, is obviously not one of them.
“It’s a chance for the kids to see competition from out of town,” coach Ken Gibson told CoBL. “For them to be able to play against the best players, not just in Maryland. A lot of these guys I haven’t seen. We’ve been to George Mason, VCU, but being up here we get to see the Philly talent. We see some of the guys that are already being recruited. That way you get to see where you at.”

Temple has its eye on a few of the players that competed for Baltimore’s Finest this weekend. Will Robinson (2015/Coppin Academy) came to Temple for an unofficial visit last week, and both Jordan McNeil (2014/Mount St. Joseph) and Allen Costly (2014/St. Frances) have drawn interest from Temple coaches.

“The guy who runs our program, Mark Karcher, played here,” Gibson said. “We really wanted to get one of our guys, like Will–same size, same frame, same game–we think he’d be a great fit.”
Perhaps it was the Temple connection, but Gibson was very complimentary of the camp.
“It was great coming up here, for them being an Under Armour school, and me being an Under Armour program, so it’s great to be involved with Temple,” Gibson said. “Hopefully I can get a kid to play for this program. I think it’s one of the best ones out there.”
