“It’s the right time to step down,” said the 61-year-old Vetter. “At this stage of my life, I want to spend more time with my family and pursue other coaching, camp and business opportunities. It’s been a great 14 years and we’ve established ourselves as one of the best programs in the country, which is something I take pride in.”

Vetter said he still plans to hold his annual basketball camp at Montrose Christian this summer and eventually, expand the program for the future.

“I don’t think you ever close the door,” Vetter said. “I may not coach at the high school level again, but I will always listen to any opportunities that may present themselves. Any coach would want to do that. What I’m looking forward to is traveling around and visiting with former players and coaches.

DC ASSAULT 17U - Under Armour Invitational Texas Recap - ROMELO TRIMBLE - ALL-MET ELITE

DC ASSAULT 17U
Under Armour Invitational Texas
Recap
 ROMELO TRIMBLE
 ALL-MET ELITE

BISHOP O'CONNELL
ARLINGTON VA.

Standout performer:
After arriving from his prom the night before, 2014 guard Romelo Trimble
(Arlington, Va./Bishop O'Connell) was right in sync with his D.C. Assault team and carried it to victory at the Under Armour Invitational. The Maryland commit is a physical combo guard who knocks down shots and possesses a powerful handle with a good basketball IQ. There is not much wasted motion in his game, which makes him especially effective on his drives, and Trimble plays with aggressiveness and unselfishness as he puts up strong scoring and assist numbers. His production was consistent and he showed he could be a difference-maker in the future. The Terrapins have a prospect who will be ready to make immediate contributions in 2014 and will be a factor throughout his career at Maryland.

DC ASSAULT 15U FORWARD - JOE HAMPTON - ALL-MET ELITE

DC ASSAULT 15U FORWARD
JOE HAMPTON
 ALL-MET ELITE

DEMATHA HS.
HYATTSVILLE MD.

Joe Hampton (DeMatha) – 6-foot-6, 205-pound forward
At 6-foot-6, Hampton is the de facto post player for DC Assault U15.
As the team’s big man, he creates mismatch problems with his ability to hit from deep.

Unless he grows significantly, Hampton will likely be a small or power forward in college. He boasts interest from Boston College, Clemson, Georgetown, Maryland and Syracuse.

“Joe is a guy that does a lot of our dirty work, being a big guy inside,” Suber said. “But he can step out and shoot the three. He’s a mismatch for the other bigs because he can go inside and shoot.”

DC ASSAULT 15U GUARD - ALANI MOORE - ALL-MET ELITE

DC ASSAULT 15U GUARD
 ALANI MOORE
 ALL-MET ELITE

DEMATHA HS.
HYATTSVILLE MD.

Alani Moore (DeMatha) – 5-foot-8, 150-pound point guard
Moore, like Cowan, is a point guard and should become a nationally recruited player in the near future. He already boasts interest from Maryland, N.C. State, Virginia, Virginia Tech and West Virginia.

At the moment, Cowan appears to the more natural point guard, but that’s not saying Moore isn’t going to emerge as a top-flight talent. Like Cowan, Moore’s upside is through the roof since he will likely continue to grow over the next few years.

“Alani is a guy that’s a leader on the floor,” Suber said. “He’s quick and explosive. He’s the type of guy that if he throws the ball away, he’ll hustle back and beat you back on defense. He’s been playing well for us and he’s had some clutch moments. He’s been playing with a lot of confidence too. He’s turning into a complete player.”

DC ASSAULT 15U GUARD - ANTHONY COWAN - ALL-MET ELITE

GOOD COUNSEL
OLNEY MD.

Anthony Cowan (Good Counsel) – 5-toot-11, 165-pound point guard

Plenty has already been written about Cowan, and the chatter appears to be valid. He looks the part of a future blue-chip recruit and should start picking up offers in the near future. He already has college interest from Maryland, Georgetown, Virginia and West Virginia.
Cowan is a pure point guard. He has strong handles and plays with a swagger that derives from confidence in his ability as a passer and shooter.

Arguably the best part about Cowan is that he’s so young and will continue to grow both physically and in his knowledge for the game.

“Anthony plays the point and he’s doing well at that,” DC Assault U15 coach Zach Suber said. “He’s good at being a vocal leader. Then he’s extremely shooting the ball well from 3-point range. Then he just has a will to win. This past weekend, he was our key guy. His determination got the other guys going.”

Stanford Robinson moved across country to accelerate his hoops education - ALL-MET ELITE

PAUL VI
FAIRFAX VA.

Stanford Robinson still had a senior season of high school basketball left when he committed to Indiana last June. But he said he felt as if his prep career had ended and his college career had just begun.

The 6-4 combo guard left Paul VI Catholic High School in Fairfax, Va. --- one of the most successful programs in the hoops-rich Washington, D.C., area --- and transferred to Findlay Prep in Henderson, Nev., outside Las Vegas.

“Every person from Findlay is a major focus of their teams in college,” Robinson said. “It prepares you. It’s like being a freshman in college. When you go to college, you’re not playing and practicing like a freshman.”

Robinson said he was attracted to Findlay because it mimics the life of a college hoops player as much as possible. There are practices and workouts at 5:30 a.m., he said. Parents are absent for the first time in their lives. Cross-country travel is a regular part of the routine.

Robinson will begin to learn whether the decision paid off when he reports to IU for summer school next month. Victor Oladipo left the Hoosiers one year early to enter the NBA Draft.

“I’m definitely going in with the mindset of working my hardest to get that starting spot,” said Robinson, who is ranked 56th nationally in the Class of 2013 by rivals.com --- up 32 spots from when he committed to the Hoosiers. “I feel that I’m good enough, that if I work hard enough, I’ll be able to play as a freshman. I feel like I have leadership skills as well and that will also help me.”

In turn, the Herndon point guard signed Wednesday to spend the next two years at the College of Central Florida.

Ferguson said. “It seems like almost all of their players end up at Division I programs, so with that opportunity, along with the good academic setting, I feel like it’s the best place for me.”

Morgan Wootten helped shape modern high school basketball - DEMATHA HS. - ALL-MET ELITE

Morgan Wootten

high school basketball

DEMATHA HS.
 HYATTSVILLE MD.

Morgan Wootten built a reputation as one of the nation's finest high school basketball coaches during a 45-year career at DeMatha Catholic in Hyattsville, Md.
Wootten, who went 1,274-192 at DeMatha.

He started the first day summer basketball camp in 1961 and, with his son Joe, the basketball coach at Bishop O'Connell in Arlington, Va., continues to hold camps.

In 1965, his DeMatha basketball team ended the 71-game winning streak of New York City powerhouse Power Memorial, which was led by 7-3 center Lew Alcindor, who later became Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. The game was the first sellout in the University of Maryland's Cole Field House.

Wootten won five mythical national championships at DeMatha. He turned down opportunities to coach at Virginia, Wake Forest, North Carolina State and Duke to remain a high school coach.

'They never forget their coach. They may forget some of the teachers they had, they may even forget some of the players they played with, but they never forget their coach.' That's the beauty of coaching. You get to touch lives, you get to make a difference.
"You get to do things for people who will never pay you back and they say you never have had a perfect day until you've done something for someone who will never pay you back."

BISHOP O'CONNELL
ARLINGTON VA.

Senior prospect Junior Etou (Arlington, Va./Bishop O'Connell) pledged to Rutgers on Wednesday during an official visit, becoming the Scarlet Knights' first high school commit after the dismissal of Mike Rice.
Etou, a 6-foot-7 power forward, chose to play for new coach Eddie Jordan, passing on offers from Xavier, Miami, Temple, Washington and Clemson.
Etou is a physical presence with a developing jumper, and he plays the game with a passion that will take him to even greater heights at the collegiate level. That passion and commitment will be welcomed at Rutgers.

In Etou, Rutgers is getting a physical post player. What makes Etou special is his tough-nosed rebounding, ability to block shots and excellent timing. Wootten describes Etou as a player who can "go and get it off the glass."

He doesn't get enough credit for his offense, but Etou is more than capable of knocking down mid-range jumpers and has the ability to shoot the 3.

Etou will bring plenty of offensive versatility to Rutgers' offense. At O'Connell, Etou played in a high-low offensive set in which he seals his man in the low post by making and maintaining contact to receive the post feed. From the high post, he will make the quick entry pass or hit the jumper. He owns a jump hook and drop-step inside the lane, where he is most comfortable. He can also be a pick-and-pop guy in ball-screen action for Rutgers.

“I can definitely tighten up my handle and my jumpshot,” he said. “I have improved in every one of those areas, but I have a lot of room to get better too. I’m looking forward to doing that.”

“I’m just going to go in there and work my butt off. I’m going to work at a high level and do what got me here,” the Team Takeover AAU product said. “I think that I may surprise some people with how well I shoot the ball. Other than that, I’m just going to go in there and workout hard, like I’ve been doing.”

“You grow up having dreams of stuff like this and to actually be that much closer to seeing it come true is an amazing feeling. But, it just makes you work that much harder because you have more dreams to achieve now.”
