CHRIS TANG - OAK HILL ACADEMY - THE NEXT JEREMY LIN? ALL-MET ELITE

CHRIS TANG - #2

Chris Tang came to Oak Hill through more conventional means. He proved himself in Virginia prep hoops and with Boo Williams's AAU program, both of which serve as direct pipelines to Mouth of Wilson. Coach Gillespie says Tang left Hampton Roads for Oak Hill because he believed the seclusion he would find in Mouth of Wilson and the elite, singularly devoted teammates he'd meet there would be the best preparation for his future. And at its core, that's what the gold team is: twelve incredibly focused kids who are willing to give up pretty much every comfort of home to get better at basketball. Many come to Coach Smith with college scholarships in hand. Sindarius Thornwell, the gold team's 6-foot-5 small forward, committed to play at South Carolina when he was in the ninth grade. He came up to Mouth of Wilson to keep himself motivated and to get his body ready for the next level. Although Tang has not yet signed a letter of intent, several schools have shown interest, including Maryland, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Stanford, Oregon, and Harvard.

Jeremy Lin remembers what it was like to be Chris Tang. "Since I was in fifth or sixth grade," Lin says, "everyone called me Yao Ming. Every time I stepped on the court, I heard 'Yao.'" Lin says it's definitely "weird" to think that his name has been substituted for Yao's, but he seems both cognizant and respectful of his platform as one of the most famous Asian Americans in the world. "At first, I let all that put a lot of pressure on me," he explained, "but over time, I had to re-prioritize my life to play for God. That's when I'm at my best, when I play for Him." No matter whom Lin plays for, he will be the representative of his people for the sole reason that his very visible and widely celebrated workplace simply has no other options. Lin, who watched Chris Tang's highlight videos last year and has high hopes for Tang's career, has some advice for his next coming: "If people are calling him Jeremy Lin or whatever, he should just play harder and better. Make it so that when the game's over, they don't have anything to say that's not about your game."

"The next Jeremy Lin" is one of those meaningless phrases born out of basketball's superstar economy and its tendency to divide its worldwide fan base down into easily defined, component parts. Somewhere in this country, there's a 6-foot-3 kid who plays a lot more like Jeremy Lin than Chris Tang does, but unless that kid has some Asian heritage or unless he ends up at an Ivy League school, the comparison will be moot. In part, an idea like "the next Jeremy Lin" comes from historic, and frankly inexcusable, laziness by generations of sportswriters who refuse to compare athletes across races, leaving us with absurdities like "Keith Van Horn reminds me of Larry Bird" or "Danny Amendola plays like a young Steve Largent" or whatever other stupidity has been spilled in the name of being "careful about race." This is all obvious, and I suppose the tendency to divide all second comings along racial lines happens in nearly every American forum, whether politics or poetry. But it happens more in sports, where stars are held up as proof of a people's physical worth. Once Jeremy Lin became a referendum on all things Asian American, the next Jeremy Lin was an inevitability. And unless this Chris Tang makes it to the NBA, the next Chris Tang will be called Jeremy Lin, as will the next and the next and so on until a Chris Tang goes out and actually supplants the legend of Jeremy Lin. The great American underdog narrative demands a hopeful coda — when you come out of nowhere to inspire a people, the last shot in your movie will always show a bunch of kids running around a playground in your replica jersey.

In a league full of super-human athletes, Kobe Bryant gives Carmelo Anthony (who he’ll face tonight in New York) the nod as the NBA’s toughest cover. Per the NY Post: “The Lakers star said Anthony, the Knicks’ MVP candidate, is the ‘most difficult’ guy for him to guard in the league, even harder than LeBron James, he told ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith on Tuesday. ‘For me?’ Bryant said. ‘Yeah.’ Bryant called Anthony, who is averaging 27.7 points per game this year, ‘a bull’ and says he ‘does it all.’ … ‘I’m [180 pounds] soaking wet,’ said Bryant. ‘Going up against that bull, it’s fun, but it’s hard.’ As for the Knicks, Bryant said they’re playing right now ‘with a belief.’ … ‘They believe that they deserve to be in the championship conversation,’ Kobe said.”

Gary Neal scored a career-best 29 points  including a 7-of-10 performance from 3-point range.
Neal’s last 3-pointer followed by a three-point play by Manu Ginobili put the Spurs ahead 130-122 with two minutes left in overtime, and they held on for the win. It was San Antonio’s fifth straight win overall and second over Houston in three days after a 114-92 victory Friday.
“Gary was unbelievable,” Parker said. “He made some big shots for us. He was the one who kept us in the game with timely 3s, very timely 3s in the fourth quarter and in overtime.”

Paul VI ends Oak Hill's 56-game win streak
ALL-MET ELITE

Paul VI (Fairfax, Va.) knocked off Oak Hill Academy (Mouth of Wilson, Va.) 56-54 on Saturday night in double overtime, ending the storied program's 56-game win streak. Paul VI was led by 13 points and 19 rebounds from game MVP Quadree Smith, a 6-foot-7, 265-pound junior post. The contest was the nightcap of the National High School Hoops Festival held at DeMatha Catholic in Hyattsville, Md.
Super sophomore Marcus Derrickson, a 6-6 forward, helped the Panthers get revenge by adding 16 points. R.J. Curington led Oak Hill with 21 points.

Paul VI's triumph ruined a WCAC homecoming for former Gonzaga (Washington, D.C.) star Nate Britt, who transferred to Oak Hill Academy over the summer.

"I left Gonzaga to better prepare me for college by being around a lot of high-level players that I can run with," Britt said. "We just had an off night. I think we got away from some of the things that we do but I think we will recover."

West Virginia
 preseason boys basketball
Fab 5
 ALL-MET ELITE
NATHAN ADRIAN
MORGANTOWN HS.

1. Martinsburg
Head coach: David Rogers
2011-12 finish: 23-3, Class AAA semifinalist
Rogers, who topped the 600-win mark last season, is looking to notch his third state title at Martinsburg and certainly has the talent to do it. The Bulldogs have the luxury of putting on the floor eight experienced seniors, headlined by Donte Grantham (6-6, F) and Jalen Lewis (6-2, G). Grantham tallied more than 18 points and 11 rebounds per game as a junior while earning Class AAA first team All-State honors. Several mid- and low-major college programs are hoping to land a major steal in Grantham.

2. Morgantown
Head coach: Tom Yester
2011-12 finish: 18-7
Yester has been a head coach since the early 1970s and has more than 600 wins to his credit. He would love to add a state title to the resume and there is plenty of room for optimism in that regard with senior Nathan Adrian on the roster. A 6-foot-8 forward committed to the in-state West Virginia Mountaineers, Adrian posted averages of 19.4 points and 10.6 rebounds per game in 2011-12. The Mohigans have some size and experience to go around him with returnees Mark Johnson (6-3, Sr., F), Nicolas Colasante (6-1, Sr., G), Dean Marshall (6-4, Sr., F), Austin Agnew (6-4, Sr., F) and Daniel Eby (6-4, Sr., F).

3. Wilson (Beckley)
Head coach: Ronald Kidd
2011-12 finish: 19-6
Wilson is the most decorated team in state history with 16 state championships. Don't be surprised if the Flying Eagles add No. 17 this winter. The backcourt is in great shape with returners Ta-Ron Ayers (5-8, Jr.) and Andrew Johnson (6-1, Sr.), who both averaged more than 13 points per game a year ago. Juniors Chase Hancock (6-2, G/F) and Donte Nabors (5-11, G) also return to the fold for the perennial power.

4. South Charleston
Head coach: Vic Herbert
2011-12 finish: 21-6, Class AAA quarterfinals
The Black Eagles were dealt a major blow when rising junior star Jon Elmore elected to finish his high school career at Christ School (Arden, N.C.). While losing a Division I prospect would be crippling for most programs, South Charleston has the talent and athleticism to bounce back. Junior forward Kevin Williams (6-5) is capable of picking up much of the slack. Seniors Rashad Kincaid, Hunter Moles (6-4, F) and Trevond Reese (6-1, G/F) – a FBS football recruit – are also key returnees.

5. Logan
Head coach: Mark Hatcher
2011-12 finish: 17-9, Class AAA quarterfinalist
The Wildcats will have a new look this winter without first team All-State player Stevie Browning, who averaged 24.9 points per game a year ago. Logan would have liked to rely on rising junior Da'Jon Streeter, who posted 15.4 points per game as a sophomore, but he departed for an out-of-state school. A. J. Reynolds (6-1, Jr., G), C. J. Williams (6-2, Jr., G/F) and Trent Dalton (5-7, Jr., G) are expected to help make the transition a smooth one.

1. DeMatha (Hyattsville, Md.)Head coach: Mike Jones
2011-12 finish: 30-6, WCAC runners-up

The Stags return one of the best players in the country in BeeJay Anya (6-8, 255, C), who recently committed to N.C. State. Anya is a physical and strong player that possesses the complete package as an inside player. DeMatha also welcomes back fellow senior Jairus Lyles (6-0, 180, G), who's already committed to Virginia Commonwealth. Lyles is a strong defender who can shoot the ball well from the perimeter. Joining Anya down low is junior Brock Ruble (6-8, 270, C), someone who can both sub in for Anya and give the Stags a bigger presence when coming into games and playing alongside him. Sophomore Jaelin Grant (6-6, 175, F) also gives DeMatha another scoring threat on the wing, making this team one of the most dangerous in the country.

2. Gonzaga (Washington, D.C.)
Head coach: Steve Turner
2011-12 finish: 26-7, WCAC semifinals

The Eagles had a stacked team a year ago, but stayed in the shadow of Paul VI and DeMatha, finishing third in the WCAC regular season. The 2012-13 team could be better than last year's squad, even without star guard Nate Britt, who transferred to Oak Hill Academy. Returning for Gonzaga is senior Kris Jenkins (6-5, 235, F), who can play physical in the paint as well as hit the deep shot. Jenkins, a Villanova commit, has incredible range as defenders can't give him much space when he's looking to shoot from behind the arc. With Britt gone, either senior Tavon Blackman (5-10, 160, G) or sophomore Bryant Crawford (6-1, 160, G) will run the point for the Eagles. Blackman has the experience that comes with the territory while Crawford is a bit of a phenom, already drawing interest from Indiana, Syracuse and Maryland. Playing the wing will be junior Jordan Abdur-Ra'oof (6-7, 190, F), who can slash and score buckets near the rim.

3. Bishop O'Connell (Arlington, Va.)
Head coach: Joe Wootten
2011-12 finish: 14-18

After a disappointing 2011-12 season, Bishop O'Connell is looking to regroup and reload for a much more productive season. Beginning with junior standout Romelo Trimble (6-2, 170, G), the Knights should be able to do so. Trimble's receiving interest from around the country as he possesses good ball skills and a deadly shot. Joining Trimble in the junior class is Steve Osu (6-9, 205, C), a lanky big man that has an inside-out package. The Knights will also get some added star power from senior Junior Etou (6-7, 210, F), who transferred from Arlington Country Day. Etou is a strong inside scorer who can rebound with the best of them. Sophomore Leroy Butts (6-7, 210, F) should also contribute some major minutes, adding to one of the area's better frontcourts.

4. St. John's (Washington, D.C.)
Head coach: Sean McAloon
2011-12 finish: 17-13

The Cadets hired Sean McAloon away from Benedictine, where he built up the private school into one of the better programs in the state of Virginia. McAloon inherits some talent on the St. John's roster, though losing Lennard Freeman to Oak Hill will initially hurt. However, junior Allante Holston (6-6, 170, F) is a rising star with a good all-around skill set on the wing. Junior Tre Campbell (6-1, 160, G), who's garnering interest from the likes of Cincinnati, Penn State and VCU, will run the point for the Cadets this year. Darian Anderson  (5-11, 160, G) can also run the point if needed, complementing Campbell in the backcourt

5. Paul VI (Fairfax, Va.)
Head coach: Glenn Farello
2011-12 finish: 35-3, WCAC champions; VISAA Division 1 champions

Losing Stanford Robinson to Findlay Prep (Henderson, Nev.) was a huge blow for the Panthers, though there's still plenty of talent on this year's roster. Tim Higgins (6-10, 205, C), a Cornell commit, is a strong defender inside. But where he can aid his team is with his mid-range shot, which is better than advertised. The Panthers will also be led by super sophomore Marcus Derrickson (6-6, 220, F), who can drive to the hoop with ease. Sophomores Franklin Howard (6-4, 170, G) and Kevin Dorsey (6-0, 170, G) will look to replace last year's stellar backcourt tandem of Tilman Dunbar and Patrick Holloway.
